This facility is for adult inmates.
The inmates housed at Staton Correctional located at 2690 Marion Spillway Rd in Elmore, AL are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.
Staton Correctional Facility is a medium security state prison for males in the operated by the Alabama Department of Corrections and houses almost 1400 inmates and provides emergency medical treatment and observation for many of the surrounding facilities including sharing the state property with the Draper Correctional Center. It is a relatively safe institution with a low incidence of violence. Of all the correctional facilities in Alabama Staton has perhaps the most programs for inmates. GED classes, college classes and many vocational skills are taught to inmates including auto body and mechanic skills. The facility also offers horticultural programs, substance abuse treatment programs and programs to improve literacy.
Staton provides emergency medical care and a medical observation unit for Draper, Elmore, and Frank Lee facilities. Additionally, Staton, through the J.F. Ingram Technical College, offers educational and vocational courses such as adult basic education, college classes, literacy programs, auto body and heavy equipment repair, upholstery, welding, horticulture, and barbering.
