The Santa Cruz County AZ Juvenile Detention Center (JDSD) is a medium to low-security detention center located at 2170 North Congress Drive Nogales, AZ that is operated locally by the Juvenile Justice Department and holds youths awaiting the determination of punishment for the crimes which they are accused. Most of the adolescents are here for less than two years.
Division Duties
- Responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of those juveniles (persons between the ages of 8 and 18) who require secure care services (e.g., placement in a juvenile detention center).
- The facility has 32 beds but an operational capacity of 16.
Staff Responsibilities
Detention officers follow daily activity schedules to ensure juveniles can access the programming activities which are available. The activities include, but are not limited to:
- Arts and crafts
- Exercise
- Programming that centers around education (a minimum of 4 hours a day)
- Recreation
Behavior Management System
- Designed to provide juveniles with more and more privileges when they follow the rules and are well behaved during their stay. Color of uniform signifies level of privileges.
- Juveniles are able to receive visits from their parents, attorneys, counselors, etc.
- Juveniles can make telephone calls and write letters to loved ones.

Call the detention center (520-375-8195) to schedule a visit. You may visit on Saturday and/or Sunday between 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Visits are 30 minutes (one hour in some cases).
Parents, grandparents and legal guardians can schedule weekend visits without delay. All other persons (siblings, uncles/aunts, etc.) must request and obtain permission from the juvenile court judge. The form to request permission may be obtained at the clerk’s office.
