CDCR – Deadwood Adult Conservation (Fire) Camp #23 basic information to help guide you through what you can do for your inmate while they are incarcerated. The facility's direct contact number: 530-468-2633

This facility is for adult inmates.

The inmates housed at Deadwood Conservation Camp #23 located at 17148 McAdams Creek Rd in Fort Jones, CA are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.

Camp History – Deadwood Conservation Camp was opened June 1, 1962, and has been an important part of Siskiyou County since. Deadwood Conservation Camp fire crews provide a large part of the labor force for CAL FIRE during wildland fires in Siskiyou County.

Inmate Programs – Inmates may participate in hobby craft, softball, basketball, horseshoes, reading or other activities. Spiritual services are provided by community volunteers. Inmates quickly learn that life at a conservation camp is more desirable than serving time behind the walls of a prison. Their work activities and efforts during emergencies build a strong work ethic and a feeling of self-worth. Soon, inmate volunteers will be offered the opportunity to participate in more advanced wildland firefighting training. This may allow the inmates who choose to participate in the training, a good chance at obtaining employment in firefighting upon release into their local community for parole.

Community service projects

  1. Maintenance of the College of the Siskiyous Fire Training Center.
  2. Fire Prevention (Fuel Reduction) in several local communities.
  3. Fire Prevention (Fuel Reduction) at Castle Crags State Park.
  4. Habitat improvement at Shasta Valley Wildlife Area.
  5. Fire Prevention (Fuel Reduction) and cleanup at local schools.
  6. Cleanup at local cemetery districts.
  7. Maintenance and cleanup of Yreka Non-profit organizations and community centers.
