INMATE PROGRAMS: The Programs Department offers a number of services to inmates for the purpose of bettering themselves in preparation for release. We offer programs that provide information and training to assist inmates in their efforts to change their lives and to prevent a return to jail. The current programs, which are available to both men and women, are listed below.

    1. Chaplaincy Services: All Chaplaincy services are supervised by Chaplain James Cornell, who works for the Good News Jail & Prison Ministry. This non-denominational organization provides a Chaplain at no cost to the jail. The Chaplain is responsible develop his own financial support from local churches, businesses and individuals. The Chaplain and approximately 45 volunteers provide Sunday and Wednesday services for each housing unit in the facility, as well as group Bible studies throughout the week. One-on-one mentoring, provided by the Chaplain and volunteers, is available to inmates upon request. Bibles and other religious materials are available upon request. A book cart with religious materials is available in each housing unit on a weekly basis.

The Chaplain is often required to deliver a crisis message to an inmate. An inmate’s family may experience a serious illness, accident, or even a death during the period of their loved one’s incarceration. The Chaplain is also available to the correctional officers and staff. It is the policy of the Chaplain’s office to provide services to all inmates regardless of their religious affiliation. The Chaplain often seeks local practitioners of the required religion to come into the jail to assist the inmate.

    2. ACER Academy: ACER Academy is the educational program for those held as juveniles in the Lake County Detention Center. It is operated by Lake County Schools and is staffed by a full-time certified teacher. Students can complete the requirements for a regular diploma, special diploma, the GED or GED/FCAT option diploma.

    3. G.E.D. Teaching and Testing: In partnership with Lake Technical College, qualified inmates may participate in GED classes and testing during their time at the Lake County Detention Center.

    4. Recovery Groups: Drug and alcohol problems contribute to recidivism. Alcoholics Anonymous, Celebrate Recovery, and LifeStream Behavioral Center offer recovery-oriented groups.

    5. Domestic Violence Awareness and Sexual Assault Victims Group:The Haven of Lake & Sumter Counties offers instruction to enable victims and perpetrators of domestic violence and sexual assault to understand the inner forces that contribute to these behaviors.

    6. Book Cart: Donated books and magazines make their way to every housing unit on a weekly basis.

    7. “Released” brochure: This brochure provides a listing of useful resources and phone numbers designed to assist inmates in their reintroduction to normal life upon their release from this facility. It is given to each inmate as they are processed into the facility.
