This facility is for adult inmates.
The Hall County GA Detention Center is a medium-security detention center located at 1700 Barber Rd Gainesville, GA which is operated locally by the Hall County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Hall County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, municipalities, the US Marshal's Service and the Gainesville Police Department who do not have their own long-term lock-up.
The main jail is a modern, state of the art facility utilizing the latest in technology and well-planned, comprehensive design. The main jail facility consists of 1,026 beds. Male and female work release houses 148 beds and the house arrest program manages up to 60 inmates daily.
As the largest division within Hall County Sheriff's Office, the jail consists of 200 officers and clerks and is responsible for multiple areas of operation within the Sheriff's Service Division. In addition to housing inmates, the division also handles all inmate transports to and from the court or other holding facilities, as well as medical and dental appointments.
This division also operates a warrant service unit that serves approximately 600 arrest warrants per month. Utilizing inmate labor, the division oversees grounds maintenance for all Sheriff's Office facilities.
Telephones
- Each cell block is equipped with collect telephones. Inmates will be allowed the use of these telephones from 6 a.m. until 11 p.m. daily. Any misuse will result in loss of privilege for an indefinite period of time.
- Inmates may not receive telephone calls or messages.
- In the case of a family emergency, when it is necessary to contact the inmate, call the jail and ask to speak with the Watch Commander.
- All outgoing inmate calls are made collect (local and long distance). If you have questions regarding this procedure and the cost, contact your telephone company.
Inmate Property
- All inmates are issued jail uniforms and jail shoes. Therefore, no other clothing or personal items will be accepted. (This does not include court clothing.) No personal hygiene items or tobacco products will be accepted at the detention center. The inmates are allowed to purchase hygiene items through the inmate commissary. Any medication or special needs items must be approved by medical staff.
- Court clothes will be accepted no more than 2 days prior to the inmate court date Monday through Friday between the hours of 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The inmate(s) will be responsible to have these clothes picked up immediately after the court proceeding have concluded. Clothes will be accepted for jury trials or by the written request of the inmate's attorney.
- Any inmate who has been found guilty and is a State inmate will be required to have all personal property picked up within 10 working days. Any property remaining at the Detention Center after this time will be disposed of. This property may be picked up between the hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Note: All inmates are required to have 1 set of street clothes at the facility at all times for use when released or transferred.
Inmate Mail
In an effort to better maintain the safety and security of the facility, Please assure you are in compliance with all rules and standards set forth in the inmate handbook. PRIVILEGED CORRESPONDENCE is defined as mail between inmates and attorneys, legal aid services and other agencies providing legal services to inmates; paraprofessionals associated with such agencies or attorneys, judges and clerks; grand juries; law enforcement agents or agencies; medical personnel; the media or public officials and their authorized representative acting in official capacity.
Acceptable postcards must:
- Be at least 3.5 inches by 4.25 inches x0.007 thickness, but no larger than 4.25 inches x 6 inches x 0.0016 inches thick.
- Be typed, written, or printed in black or blue ink.
- Stamps are NOT allowed, postcards metered or have pre-printed stamp.
- Postcards must be white in color and are available at any United States Post Office.
- State the inmates name and offender number.
Unacceptable postcards will be returned to sender/ and or destroyed; types of unacceptable postcards include but are not limited to postcards that are:
- Defaced.
- Greeting Cards, Holiday Cards and Birthday Cards.
- Covered with plastic or any other wrappings.
- Marked with paint, crayons, or markers.
- Labeled or have stickers affixed to it including address labels.
- Stained or have watermarks.
- Covered with biohazardous material (e.g. lipstick, perfume).
- Depicting nudity, weapons, or gang references.
- Written in code.
- Oversized postcards.
- Postcards with glue or taped material.
- Contains cash or material.
- Contains Polaroid photographs or photos larger than 3×5.
- Contains food, clothing or any "contraband" items
- Contains any literature, item, etc., which has been shown to cause disturbance or breach of security within the Jail.
- Contains plastic bookmarkers.
Additional inmate mail information
- Any mail received but deemed undeliverable will either be sent back to the sender or placed in the inmate's personal property until release. Religious books may be received through U.S. Postal Service directly from the publisher addressed to the inmate at the Hall County Jail.
- Up to 3 (three) photographs may be mailed to the jail, provided the envelope is clearly marked PHOTOGRAPHS.
- The inmate name and Offender number must be written on the back of each photograph. Nothing else is to be written on the photograph.
- Photographs must be unaltered, and may not contain any adhesives, such as stickers or labels.
- Envelopes containing additional inmate correspondence will be destroyed.
- Magazines are not accepted from family or friends and cannot be ordered and paid for from the inmate's account.
- Inmates are ONLY allowed 3 (three) books at any given time. Books are to be mailed directly from the publisher.

Rules for Visitation
- All visitors must obey all applicable jail rules or directives from officers.
- Visitors must sign-in on the visitor's logbook.
- Visitors must have a valid picture I.D. and comply with all applicable rules.
- All minors and children must be accompanied by an adult who can vouch for their identity and age.
- All visitors must refrain from loud talking, disruptive, or dangerous conduct.
- Visitors who come to the Jail under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs will be turned away and may be subject to arrest.
- No firearms, dangerous devices, controlled substances, or other contraband is permitted inside the detention facility. Anyone attempting to bring contraband into the jail is subject to arrest (O.C.G.A. 42-4-13).
- If children are brought into the facility they must remain in the care of an adult at all times.
- Handbags, diaper bags, carry-alls and other valuables must be secured in your vehicle. Any item brought into the Jail is subject to be searched.
- There will be no smoking within the Hall County Jail.
- Only those people visiting will be allowed within the detention facility. All others will be required to wait in the parking lot or inside their vehicles.
- Visitors may be turned away if they are deemed to pose a threat to the security of the facility.
- Visitation for the Hall County Jail is subject to cancellation or change due to compelling operational problems to be determined by the facility commander. Visitation is a privilege subject to the below guidelines.
Securus ONSITE Video Visitation
All onsite visits are conducted via video visitation terminals (excluding attorney visits). Inmates are allowed one 30-minute onsite video visit per week between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. based on availability.
Onsite visits are available on the following days:
- Tuesday
- Wednesday
- Thursday
- Saturday
Onsite visits are not held on the following days:
- Monday
- Friday
- Sunday
All visits must be scheduled 24 hours in advance. Visitors should arrive 15 minutes prior to the scheduled time to check in with the visitation officer. They must bring a valid government-issued ID. Visitors may log into a video visitation session 2 minutes ahead of the scheduled start time. There will be no more than three visitors, including children, allowed during the 30-minute period, and all visitors must come at the same time.
The video feed will automatically turn off 30 minutes after the scheduled start time. Visitors can schedule a visit through Securus Tech or at the Hall County Visitation Center during onsite visitation hours.
The 30-minute rule does not apply to attorneys and clergy members. Clergy members are allowed to visit throughout the week between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Attorneys may visit at any time.
Visitor Dress Code
- All tops must have high neck, sleeves and be full length.
- All tops will be made of non-transparent material and color.
- (examples of impermissible attire; low cut shirts, tank tops, muscle shirts, spaghetti straps, sleeveless shirts, midriff shirts, fishnet shirts, mesh material, light-colored shirts that can be seen through, sheer shirts and shirts with holes or tears).
- All shorts, skirts and dresses must be knee-length.
- Bottoms must not be low cut as to sit below the hips and undergarments should not be visible.
- Bottoms will be made of a non-transparent material and color.
- (Examples of impermissible attire; mesh bottoms, light-coloured bottoms that can be seen through, bottoms that have holes and tears, low rise bottoms and shorts that show under clothing).
- Visitor dress code rules also apply to remote video visits.
- Visitors will not be allowed to use other materials to cover inappropriate dress; such as jackets, coats, scarves, etc.
Which Inmates May Have Visitation
- Inmates that have processed through the booking and classification procedures and are currently assigned to permanent housing within the facility.
- Inmates that have not lost his/her privileges by violating detention center rules.
