The inmates housed at GDC – Central State Prison located at 4600 Fulton Mill Road in Macon, GA are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.

MISSION:
Ensure public safety and effectively house offenders while operating a safe and secure facility. Houses general population and Mental Health Level III offenders. This facility also operates a Correctional Industries Garment Factory. Facility is a central tool, vehicle storage and warehouse for the Offender Construction Division. Sex Offender Release Site. Host facility for the Macon Transitional Center.
HOUSING:
Six living units each, containing four pods. Each pod has 12 two-man cells. Half of one unit contains 24 Isolation/Segregation beds. 141 beds are reserved for Mental Health Level III. A separate "fast track" unit houses 288 general population offenders in four open dormitories with 72 beds per dorm. This facility also houses a C.E.R.T. Team and a Canine Unit.

Central State Prison is located in Macon Georgia, part of Bibb county. It is a medium security institution that can house 1153 adult male inmates. Inmates are held in either two man cells or in an open dormitory setting. In addition, inmates who are difficult to manage, or who have safety and security concerns are placed in segregation, which isolates the inmate from the general population.
Offenders incarcerated here can receive counseling for substance abuse, family violence, and a variety of individual therapies. Inmates can learn a useful new skill in the vocational programs, including plumbing, building maintenance, carpentry, and garment manufacturing for the correctional industry.
