The inmates housed at Montgomery State Prison located at 650 Mt Vernon/Alston Rd in Mt. Vernon, GA are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.

Montgomery State Prison is a medium-security institution that can hold about 900 adult male inmates who are housed in six dormitories. Eight isolation cells are reserved for inmates who become difficult to manage, and eight two-man segregation units are reserved for inmates with safety/security concerns. Inmates may be selected to be part of a work crew that can work outside the prison for various supporting roles in the county government. Inmates can also participate in vocational programs that include working on a farm (egg production), landscaper, custodian, auto repair and maintenance, forklift operator, food preparation, and upholstery.

Ensure public safety and effectively house offenders while operating a safe and secure facility by housing medium security and below general population offenders in support of Correctional Industries and outside details.

HOUSING – Consists of six dormitories in the main building, all with 64 beds each. There are eight isolation and eight two-man segregation cells and a fire department with ten beds. This facility also houses a Fire Station and an Egg Producing Plant.

WORK DETAILS – Revenue details are provided for the Department of Transportation, Montgomery County and the City of Mt. Vernon. The prison also operates extensive poultry and egg-producing plant for the Food and Farm Division. A fully operational 10 man fire department.
