The Montgomery County KS Jail is a medium-security detention center located at 300 E Main St Independence, KS which is operated locally by the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Montgomery County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, municipalities, the US Marshal's Service and the Independence Police Department who do not have their own long-term lock-up.
The County Jail is only allowed to confirm or deny whether a person is currently in custody herel. If you would like information about an inmate of the Montgomery County Jail, you will need to call the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office at (620) 330-1000. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office can give you information such as:
- Bond amounts
- Release times
- Charges
- Court dates
Again, the Montgomery County Jail is not allowed to discuss these things with anyone that calls.
Under no circumstances will we pass information to inmates. You will need to either write the individual or speak to them on the phone when they call. Again, under no circumstances will we pass information to the inmates.
Bond amounts are available at the Sheriff’s Office (across the lobby) or at the location of the arresting authority. Charges filed against an inmate are available from the arresting authority.

Montgomery County KS Jail – Visitation
Visitation (Three missed visitation appointments will result in suspension of visitor)
- Male Inmates – Fridays 1-7 pm. (I hr. appts.) You must call between 8-10 am Friday morning to schedule your appointment. Appointments are first-come, first-serve. Visitors must arrive 30 minutes before your appointment time. If you are late, you may not receive the full visit.
- Female Inmates – Saturdays 9-12 pm. (I hour visits). Walk-in appointments. No need to schedule an appointment.
- Work-Crew Inmates – Sundays 1-4 pm. (I hr. visits). Walk-in appointments. No need to schedule an appointment.
MUST BE 18. You must fill out an application to visit every time your inmate is booked, as the circumstances may be different each time an inmate is arrested. Approvals come from the Sheriffs office and County attorney, as well as jail administration. A denial from any entity will deny the approval. The process takes approximately 72 hours. If a person has been arrested or incarcerated in the last 6 months, on bond, probation, or parole, the application will be denied.
If you are on Bond, Probation, Parole, or have been incarcerated in the jail in the last 6 months, your visitation will be denied.
You must call in each visitation day to make an appointment for that day. Then you must be here 30 minutes before that time.
Visitation is a privilege and will be cancelled for inmates with behavioral problems.
