This facility is for adult inmates.

The Livingston County MI Jail is a medium-security detention center located at 200 S Highlander Way Howell, MI which is operated locally by the Livingston County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Livingston County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, municipalities, the US Marshal's Service and the Howell Police Department who do not have their own long-term lock-up.

The existing Livingston County Jail was first built in 1972 with a capacity of 62 inmates. A jail expansion in 1996 increased the capacity to 205 inmates. Another renovation in 2003 expanded capacity to 254. With the most recent expansion and renovation they currently have a capacity of 411 inmates.

Mail – Inmates are permitted to write to any person outside of our jail facility. Incoming inmate correspondence must be addressed as follows:

• Incoming mail must reflect the sender's name and address.
• Correspondence from Attorneys, as well as court and public officials, may be opened in the presence of the inmate to whom it is addressed and searched for contraband.
• In order to be considered legal mail, it must be conspicuously marked as "legal mail", "privileged", "attorney-client" or similar indication that the correspondence is intended to be confidential. It must be conspicuously marked as coming from an attorney or a law firm and includes the law firm or legal services providers name, address, attorney name and valid bar number. It must be addressed by name to a specific inmate.
• Mail must be sent via US Postal Service
• Items not allowed: postage stamps, envelopes, blank stationery.
• All mail, except bonafide legal mail, will be by standard white postcards with no pictures. The postcards must be no larger than 5×7. This is both incoming and outgoing mail.
• No stickers, glitter, or perfume sprayed postcards, drawings written in crayon, gel pen, glue or other similar substance. Drawings in pencil or regular pen will be permitted with the below exceptions.
• Any mail or photo whether paper or electronic that contains information regarding any of the following shall be rejected and if applicable returned to sender or placed in the inmate's locker.
  • The manufacturing, use, procurement of weapons, explosives, incendiary devices, poisons or drugs.
  • Advocating disorder, riots, or other institutional disruption
  • Sexually explicit or enticing drawings or photos
  • Drawings, icons, symbols, photos or photo content that may be considered gang-related.

Personal Property – If sentenced to prison, an inmate's personal property may be released to a family member Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8:00am and 4:00pm. Unclaimed property will be discarded after 90 days.

Court Attire – Inmates are permitted to wear their own clothing if they are to appear in court for jury trial. Arrangements to have clothing delivered (and picked up following a trial) must be initiated by the inmate.

Inmate Phones – The Livingston County Jail has partnered with Inmate Calling Solutions allows inmates to call their family and friends. This system allows collect, pre-paid or debit calls. Many times phone companies will not allow or will put a "block" on a customer's telephone, eliminating the ability to receive collect calls. Further, most cellular phones will not allow collect calls. You can set up and account with Inmate Calling Solutions and pre-pay to allow calls from the jail. Using the pre-paid and debit options gives inmates more freedom to contact friends and family without the worry of "blocks" or the high cost of collect calls. You must go through Inmate Calling Solutions to set up a pre-paid account. The Livingston County Jail does not have the ability to set up the account for you.

Livingston County MI Jail – Visitation

All inmate visits are through video visitation. There are multiple reasons we now do video visitation. It drastically reduces inmate movement since they are able to visit from their housing area. In addition it vastly increased the available hours for visitation as well as increased the number of visits each inmate may have. It also allows for remote visitation which means family and friends who don't live in the area can visit.

Visitation is Monday through Friday from 8:30 am until 8:00 pm (excluding meal times and counts).

Actual available inmate visitation times are dependent on where the inmate is housed. You must register with ICSolutions in order to schedule a visit.
