NJ DOC – East Jersey State Prison (EJSP) basic information to help guide you through what you can do for your inmate while they are incarcerated. The facility's direct contact number: 732-499-5010

This facility is for adult inmates.

The inmates housed at East Jersey State Prison located at 1100 Woodbridge Rd in Rahway, NJ are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.

East Jersey State Prison, the state’s second-oldest institution, provides maximum, medium and minimum security programs for about 1,500 adult male offenders located in Rahway of Middlesex County.

The prisons distinctive large dome and forbidding front gates have made it featured in many films and shows. This facility is also known as Rahway State Prison, although the name was officially changed to East Jersey State Prison in 1988 at the request of township residents. Many motion pictures have been filmed at the facility due to its large dome and distinctive architecture and imposing metal gates.

Inmates housed at EJSP can participate in vocational courses that teach inmates automotive repair, autobody repair, horticulture, culinary arts, and painting. Additionally, inmates can receive an adult basic education, earn a GED and even take college courses offered through Union County College. This prison was the location of the original "Scared Straight!" program, where inmates sentenced to life terrified young juvenile delinquents into making changes to their lives.
