The Cleveland County NC Detention Center is a medium-security detention center located at 407 McBrayer St Shelby, NC which is operated locally by the Cleveland County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Cleveland County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, municipalities, the US Marshal's Service and the Shelby Police Department who do not have their own long-term lock-up.

The Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office Detention Division consists of two facilities, The Cleveland County Detention Center, 407 McBrayer Street, Shelby and the Law Enforcement Detention Center located at 100 Justice Place Shelby, North Carolina. Both facilities are manned twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

The Detention Division is comprised of 68 full time detention officers. The supervisory staff consist of a Major, Detention Administrator (Captain), Assistant Detention Administrator (Lieutenant) four Deputy Sheriff Sergeants and twelve Detention Corporals.
