This facility is for adult inmates.
The inmates housed at Wake CC located at 1000 Rock Quarry Rd in Raleigh, NC are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.
Wake Correctional Center in Raleigh is a minimum security prison for adult males located in Raleigh, North Carolina that houses 414 adult male inmates.
Additional work assignments within the prison include landscaping, custodial work, laundry, and food services. Wake Correctional Center offers vocational classes in HVAC, electrical wiring, horticulture, reading blueprints, and certified communication. Additional classes offered to inmates include GED courses, and college level correspondence courses. Offenders can also participate in Bible studies and religious worship services offered through the Chaplain's office.
It is primarily a “work” unit in that 80 percent of the inmates leave the facility each day for incentive wage work assignments in various state agencies in the Wake County area, i.e. the Governor's Mansion, Lt. Governor's Office, N.C. State Fairgrounds, Employment Security Commission, Department of Administration, Division of Motor Vehicles, and the Department of Transportation. Inmates also work at other adult correction facilities such as NCCIW, Central Prison, Johnston Correctional Center, Franklin Correctional Center, and Enterprise Correction operations. There are also approximately 50 inmates nearing parole or release that participate in the work release program, leaving the facility to work for businesses in the community. Incentive wage work assignments are also available at the prison in the food service, clothes house, janitorial, landscaping, maintenance, canteen, and recreation areas.
Wake Technical Community College works with the prison to provide full-time vocational classes in Certified Communications, Heating/Air Conditioning, and Electrical Wiring. Part-time classes in Blueprint Reading and Horticulture are also available. Educational classes in GED, college-level courses and college correspondence classes are available.
The Family Enrichment Program is offered through Vinebrook Family Services and provides an opportunity for the inmates and their families to work with counselors on a wide range of marriage and family issues.
Inmates may participate in worship services, Bible studies and various spiritual discussion groups on site. Wake Correctional Center has volunteer chaplains who minister to the inmates.
HISTORY – Wake was established in 1966 as the Community Correctional Center, a 104-bed pre-release facility designed to reintegrate long-term offenders back into the community during their last 90 days of imprisonment. In 1969, the prison became the Wake Advancement Center, a prison designated to provide pre-release training for inmates. A modular dormitory was added in 1977 but closed.
The prison was converted from an advancement center and expanded in 1988 to house an additional 200 inmates as part of the $28.5 million Emergency Prison Facilities Development program. Another 100 beds were added as part of the $87.5 million prison construction program authorized in 1993 and opened in November 1994.
