The Adair County MO Jail is a medium-security detention center located at 215 N Franklin St in Kirksville, MO. This county jail is operated locally by the Adair County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Adair County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, municipalities, the US Marshal's Service and the Kirksville Police Department who do not have their own long-term lock-up.

There are new detainees delivered to the jail daily, you can see arrest records here. Some are released after putting up bail, are released to a pretrial services caseload, are placed under supervision by a probation agency, or are released on their own recognizance with an agreement to appear in court. If there is no release, the inmate must wait here at the jail for their court appearance as a guest of the County, getting a bed and three square meals.

Trustees are inmates who work in the jail as cooks, as orderlies for the staff, in the laundry or in the commissary. The trustees are paid a very small amount for their time and some jail gives the trustees a few days off their sentence in exchange for their work.

When an inmate arrives in jail they are put together in a large holding cell with other inmates in the intake. While in intake they are under heightened observation. Violent and out of control inmates are segregated.

Can I Get Work Release?

Work release is when you are released from jail during the day so that you can go to work. At the end of the day, you return to jail for the night. There are a number of requirements to be able to get into the work-release program. Most programs require your employer to fill out some paperwork. If you want to get into the work release program then apply prior to being sentenced to jail. This will minimize the amount of time you spend in jail waiting to get into the program.

Can I call my family in Jail?

Adair County MO Jail has a phone program where inmates make outbound calls only, you cannot call into jail. Since you are paying for those calls don't make it a habit of accepting collect-calls, they are over $15 each. The alternative is to set up an account through their third-party phone company which charges steep fees for each minute used. You are paying for them to call you. Adair County MO Jail – Visitation

All inmates are allowed two, 30-minute visits a week. Visiting days and times are determined by the area and room of the jail that they are assigned. To learn an inmate's visitation day/time please contact the Sheriff's Office at 660-665-4644 ext 1.

If you are travelling a long distance to visit an inmate (one hour's drive or longer) special visits can be made through the Corrections Branch Director.

Persons wishing to visit an inmate must meet the below requirements:

• The visitor must sign in with correctional personnel at the control room window which is located at the far end of the lobby
• The visitor must show photo identification
• The visitor can not have been incarcerated in the Detention Center in the previous sixty days prior to the visitation.
  • An exception shall be made if the visitor was held in the Detention Center on only a twelve-hour self-protection hold that did not result in criminal charges being filed.
• No visitors will be allowed to visit if they are a victim, co-conspirator or witness in an inmate's case, or any other ongoing case, or are prohibited to have contact with the detainee by court order.
• Any person wishing to visit is subject to being searched. Any person refusing to be searched will be asked to leave the facility.
• Usage of cellphones in the visitation rooms is prohibited. Recording or photography of the visitation areas will result in being banned from future visits.

Children are allowed to participate in visitation. Children are required to be supervised by an adult during the duration of the visit. However, if they become unruly, disruptive or are defacing or damaging county property, the visitation will be cancelled and they will no longer be allowed to visit.

All visitors are required to adhere to a dress code. Any person in violation of the dress code will not be allowed to visit. Dress code violations include but are not limited to:

• tube tops
• swimming attire
• clothing which is above mid-thigh to include cut-offs, shorts, dresses and skirts
• see-through clothing
• clothing which exposes or make visible the breasts or not wearing a shirt
• clothes that expose the midriff area
• bare feet

If a visitor is suspected of being intoxicated they will be asked to submit to a portable breath test to sample their breath to gauge their blood alcohol content. If they refuse to submit to this test, they will be asked to leave the facility.
