The Aitkin County Jail is a medium-security detention center located at 217 2nd St NW Aitkin, MN which is operated locally by the Aitkin County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Aitkin County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, municipalities, the US Marshal's Service and the Aitkin Police Department who do not have their own long-term lock-up.
The Aitkin County Jail is an 89-bed facility housing men and women. 14 Corrections Officers provide a safe and humane detention facility for persons lawfully placed in our care. The facility holds people waiting for trial and people convicted of a crime who are sentenced. The jail in its current configuration opened in 2002 as a remodel of the 1984 jail. The jail has both linear cellblocks and direction supervision type units.
The court will assign you a date and time to report to jail. We can only take you on the date and time assigned by the court, you may not report earlier. Reporting late or not reporting will result in further sanctions by the court. If you drive yourself in, park your car in the county parking lot on the south side of 1st St NW near the silver garage.
On your report day, bring as little personal property as you can, most personal property will not be allowed in the jail. You and any property are subject to search at any time while you are in jail. The jail is not responsible for any property lost while you are staying in the jail. All property left at the jail 30 days after a release or transfer to another facility will be treated as donated to the jail or destroyed.
Things you may bring:
- Prescription medications in their original bottle with the pharmacy script on the bottle.
- Any other medical device required by a documented medical condition. Call ahead to notify the jail.
- Medical insurance card.
- Reading, prescription glasses, contact lens maintenance products and extra lenses.
- A watch.
- Extra clothing if you expect to go out on the STS crew or work release.
- Money for purchasing toiletries and other commissary items.
- Wedding ring.
Information to give to friends and family:
The jail does not accept phone calls for offenders. The jail does have a telephone system for making collect calls or calls by calling card. Cards are available for purchase in $10 increments.
There is a messaging line for offenders at 218-927-2513. Use of this system requires creating a pin account after arrival in the jail. We encourage using the first 3 or 4 letters of your last name.

Sentenced to Serve and Work Release Offenders:
STS and Work Release are a jail privilege. You will be held inside the jail for a minimum of 3 days to observe your behavior. All fees must be paid in advance to work on the STS crew or go out on Work Release.
Pay to Stay:
The jail charges $20.00 a day to stay in the jail. A bill will be provided to you within a week of your out date. The bill will explain methods of payment. Work Release offenders may have to pay their bills in advance
Sentenced to Serve:
The jail provides a 'Sentenced-to-Serve' (STS) program, allowing offenders to shorten sentences or reduce fines through community service. They provide service to many charity programs, schools, and community functions through a variety of job assignments from yard work to construction and more.
Huber law (Work release) program:
The Huber law allows non-violent sentenced offenders to remain employed while serving their sentence in jail. An offender is released to go to work and immediately returns to jail at the end of the workday. Offenders wishing to be placed on the Huber program must have it included in their sentence and have employment within 60 miles of the facility. To apply for the program, contact Karla White before you report to jail.
Telephone service:
The jail does have a telephone system for making collect calls or calls by calling card. Cards are available for purchase in $10 increments. Outside calling cards do not work. Reliance Telephone is our service provider, an account can be set up at the following number, 800-896-3201.

Offenders are limited in the items they may have. Avoid sending large quantities of material, excess and prohibited property will be stored until the offender's release.
Money should be sent through the mail; we accept money orders and cashier checks only.
Property allowed to be dropped at the jail:
- Clothing for STS or Work Release.
- Medications in their original prescription bottle with script clearly visible on the bottle.
- Glasses and contact lens supplies.
- Legal papers and bills requiring immediate action.
All property left at the jail 30 days after a release or transfer to another facility will be treated as donated to the jail or destroyed.

In person visiting:
The jail has three opportunities to visit weekly:
Sundays 1:00pm to 4:00pm (last appointment 3:30pm)
Tuesdays 6:00pm to 9:00pm (last appointment 8:30pm)
Thursdays 1:00pm to 4:00pm (last appointment 3:30pm)
Visits are scheduled in 25-minute blocks. Appointments must be made at least 24 hours in advance. The appointments can be scheduled at 218-927-7444, Monday through Friday during regular business hours ONLY. A visitor must appear on an offender’s visitor list, contact them if you are not on their list. Visitors are subject to an ID check at check-in and may be searched at any time during the visit.
