The AK DOC – Anchorage Correctional Complex is a state prison located at East Building
1400 E 4th Ave in Anchorage, AK in Anchorage Borough County. This State – medium security prison is operated by the Alaska Department of Corrections to hold inmates who have been convicted to and sentenced for a crime in the state of Alaska.
The inmates housed at the institution are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. Alaska's mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.
State facilities provide basic living standards to meet most of the inmate's needs, including dietary, health, fitness, education, religious practices, entertainment, and many others. Conditions in these prisons vary within the AK DOC depend on many intersecting factors including the age of the buildings, the security level of the inmates and budget.
Inmates housed at Anchorage Correctional Complex are able to do a variety of self help programs. Depending on the building the inmate is in they may have access to alcoholics anonymous, anger management courses, and educational programs. Some of the educational programs include basic education, which is learning skills that are below a high school education, and also GED programs which covers high school education and diplomas. Inmates can also take advantage of many computer courses and resume writing classes that will teach an inmate the basics they need to know in order to obtain a job upon being released.
When an inmate first arrives at Anchorage Correctional Complex they will be searched and cuffed and moved to the booking office. The inmate should ensure they have no personal property with them, but are encouraged to bring a small amount of cash to place on their commissary. They will be drug tested and administered a breathalyzer. A medical questionnairewill be given to the inmate and then they will be fingerprinted and their inmate photo will be taken. Next you will be escorted to a room to be strip searched and issued your prison uniform, as well as given your housing location. Once the inmate hascompleted the entire booking process and is in their assigned housing area they will be able to make a collect phone call.
