The inmates housed at AK DOC – Goose Creek Correctional Center located at 22301 West Alsop Road in Wasilla, AK are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.

Goose Creek Correctional Center is a fairly new correctional facility. It opened in 2012 and can house approximately 3000 inmates. It serves as an intake and classification facility as well as a long term correctional center for medium security inmates.
Goose Creek is a state of the art facility and implementing many new procedures. One of the most interesting rules this facility has instituted is that all mail is photo-copied, the original piece of mail is then destroyed and the copy is sent to the inmate. This is to help prevent illegal substances from being mailed in disguised as paper with writing on it. Greeting cards do not get delivered to the inmates or destroyed, instead they are placed in the inmate’s personal property. Photos are still received by inmates but are first screened for drugs.
