PO Box 919 in Palmer, AK are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.
AK DOC – Palmer Correctional Center – Visitation
Palmer Correctional Center houses both medium and minimum security inmates. The facility offerssubstance abuse treatment as well as psychiatric treatments for acute disorders. There is also a family violence intervention program based at this facility that helps offenders break the cycle of domestic violence. This facility also has an outpatient sex offender treatment program that claims to help lower the recidivism rate of sex offenders through group therapy.
Inmates can earn their GED and get adult basic education at this facility. Adult basic education, sometimes referred to as ABE, gives offenders the educationequivalent of 9th grade, while the GED program helps inmates earn their high school equivalency diploma. Vocational studies at this institution are in small engine repair, forklift operation, welding courses, and many computer information/drafting courses. Inmates are encouraged to take advantage of these classes while they are incarcerated as it teaches them a new skill and can help in their eventual reintegration to society.

Inmates housed in the Medium Facility are divided into four groups. Medium Facility inmates need to determine which group they are in so they may inform their visitors. Group I (A-K) — Monday, Wednesday, Saturday and Holidays Group II (L-Z) — Tuesday, Friday, Sunday and Holidays Group III (TLC) — Saturday, Sunday, and Holidays All visits will be approximately one hour in length. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday evenings: 6:30 PM, 7:45 PM, and 9:00 PM (adult visitors only) Saturday, Sunday, and Holidays: 10:30 AM (adult visitors only), 1:00 PM, 2:15 PM, 6:30 PM, 7:45 PM, and 9:00 PM (adult visitors only) No Thursday visiting. Inmates housed in the Palmer Correctional Center may be visited every day except Thursdays when there is no visiting.. All visitors must check in thirty minutes prior to visits. Visitors will be transported to the Medium and Minimum facilities and back to the HRC at approximate designated times only. The bus will not be held or called back. All inmates requiring Secure Visiting must submit a written request 48 hours in advance. All Transitional Living Community Inmates must submit a written request 48 hours in advance of weekday visits. Special Conditions Visitation Prisoners who have a court order precluding visitation with certain individuals will have the following visitation times effective April 30, 2015: Sunday: Secure visits only during the 1300 and 1945 hour visitation times. Monday – Wednesday, and Friday: contact visiting in the medium facility visitation room, during 0900 – 1000 hours and 1400 – 1500 hours. All special conditions visitation will be on a first come first approved basis.
