AL DOC – Childersburg Work Release basic information to help guide you through what you can do for your inmate while they are incarcerated. The facility's direct contact number: 256-378-3821
This facility is for adult inmates.
The inmates housed at Childersburg Work Release located at 13501 Plant Rd in Childersburg, AL are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.
The Childersburg Community Based Facility and Community Work Center is a state prison facility operated by the Alabama Department of Corrections located at 13501 Plant Rd in Alpine, AL. The CBF offers educational, drug treatment and re-entry programs operating concurrently with the Community Work and Work Release Programs.
Inmates may be assigned to work for various government agencies for paid employment. Inmates also work on the property, including a small farm project, and supporting educational or drug treatment programs. Childersburg’s small farm project produces fresh produce that reduces the facility’s outsourcing produce order by 80%-100% in the peak harvest seasons. Inmates in the Work Release program work for private employers in the community and are paid the prevailing wage. Work Release inmates not employed work on the property or participate in work training classes through the Work Keys Program, administered by the Central Alabama Community College.
The facility’s vibrant religious community is served by a volunteer Chaplain and certified volunteers of all faiths. Religious opportunities are expansive, with structured services/programs occurring at the institution on a daily basis. Childersburg is classified as a minimum security institution.
“Work Release” is a program of the AL DOC in which selected inmates are allowed gainful employment in the community and will be supervised in a community-based facility when not working. The program is designed to assist inmates preparing for release and to aid them in making the transition from a structured institutional environment and reintegrate back into the community. A Classification Specialist will explain to the inmate how they can qualify for the Work Release Program.
From their earned wages, a percentage of the gross salary will be deducted and paid to the AL DOC to help defray the cost of maintaining them in the work release program. Inmates that participate in the Work Release program agree to pay a fee to cover the cost of transportation to and from their work site. If they are ordered by the courts, you will pay restitution, court cost, and child support. Inmates will be charged a medical co-pay fee for specific medical services rendered. The inmate will be charged a drug testing fee if they test positive for any illegal substances. Inmates will be charged a laundry fee for laundry service on your free-world clothing.
State and federal income taxes and Social Security taxes will also be deducted from their gross paycheck. The remainder of their wages will be deposited in their PMOD account. In some circumstances, depending on their PMOD balance, they may be allowed to send money home.
When inmates first arrive at a work release facility, they will be given a job assignment working at the facility. In the event that a public protest is received (victim, Judge or District Attorney) in regards to your participation in the Work Release Program, and if the protest is honored by the AL DOC, inmate may be returned to a more restrictive facility, or they may remain at the work release facility and not allowed to work in the community. Inmates will not be considered a participant in the program until they are approved and placed in a paying job in the community.
