AL DOC – Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women basic information to help guide you through what you can do for your inmate while they are incarcerated. The facility's direct contact number: 334-567-4369
This facility is for adult inmates.
The inmates housed at Julia Tutwiler Prison located at 8966 US Hwy 231 N in Wetumpka, AL are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.
Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women is a state facility that handles all the intake for about 1000 female offenders entering the Alabama Department of Corrections located in Wetumpka, AL. Because it acts as a classification/intake facility and due to the fact that it has death row inmates, it is considered a maximum security institution.
Tutwiler has a medical and mental health unit. Elderly female inmates, inmates who are pregnant, and inmates who are ill can all be treated at Tutwiler. The facility offers substance abuse services and acts as an administrative support hub for many of the Alabama institutions. This institution is also responsible for manufacturing all the inmate clothing for the AL DOC.
The facility has an auditorium, a chapel, and offers substance-abuse treatment and administrative ancillary services. Tutwiler’s clothing plant manufactures inmate clothing items for ADOC and county jails. It was named in honor of the "Angel of the Stockades", Julia S. Tutwiler, a noted Alabama educator and crusader for inmate education, classification, and for improving prison conditions.
