AL DOC – St. Clair Correctional Facility basic information to help guide you through what you can do for your inmate while they are incarcerated. The facility's direct contact number: 205-467-6111
This facility is for adult inmates.
The inmates housed at St. Clair Correctional located at 1000 St. Clair Rd in Springville, AL are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.
St. Clair Correctional Facility is a close custody state prison for adult males located in Springville, AL, under the supervision of the Alabama Department of Corrections with an operating capacity of about 1,500 inmates. The facility operates the Alabama Correctional Industries vehicle restoration and a chemical plant and provides on-site classroom settings for academic/vocational educational programs through Gadsden State Community College. St. Clair also provides a total care medical infirmary with complete dental care, dialysis, a cancer unit, emergency room, and diagnostic services through a private medical contractor. St. Clair is also home for the Department’s “The New Outlook Therapeutic Community Program".
Violence at St. Clair – In April 1985 it was the site of a major riot where five employees were beaten and 22 others including the warden and his deputy were held hostage by inmates armed with guns. The prisoners complained of "barbaric conditions." Press reports indicate that the facility is in a lawless condition. One expert cited "a total breakdown of the necessary basic structures that are required to operate a prison safely."
Within a two and a half year period ending September 2014, six inmates had been killed in the facility. The Alabama non-profit Equal Justice Initiative had already called for a change in leadership three months prior, after inmate Jodey Waldrop was killed in the early morning hours of June 3, for what they described as a pattern of serious neglect and violence, including an incident when the then-warden punched a handcuffed prisoner.
In March 2016 a correctional officer was wounded by a knife, trying to break up a fight. On May 13, 2016, another inmate was found dead of unknown causes. In June 2016 the Equal Justice Initiative filed a motion in federal court arguing that "severe overcrowding, understaffing and dangerous conditions violate the prisoners' constitutional rights," and that the prisons severe understaffing poses a safety risk to guards and correctional officers.
