The Allegheny County PA Jail – 2nd Avenue is a medium-security detention center located at 950 2nd Ave Pittsburgh, PA which is operated locally by the Allegheny County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Allegheny County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, municipalities, the US Marshal's Service and the Pittsburgh Police Department who do not have their own long-term lock-up.

The services of Allegheny County Jail-2nd Ave for inmates and former inmates support re-entry into the community and reduce recidivism. Through funding provided through the Jail Collaborative, we work with the Department of Human Services (DHS), the Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD), court officials, service providers, ex-offenders, faith-based community organizations, families and the community at large.

Original articles of mail and photographs will be held at the Allegheny County Jail for a period of thirty days and destroyed thereafter.

Letters

• Keep it simple and use blue/black ink or pencil only
• No stickers are allowed, including an address sticker
• No stains, glitter, lipstick kisses or perfume
• Everything will be photocopied. Originals will not be delivered to inmates.
• Letters cannot be more than three pages and must be no larger than 8.5 x 11 letter sized paper- front and back.

Photos

• Inmates will only receive colored copies of incoming photographs and only two 4 x 6 copies of photographs are authorized, per week per inmate

Publications

• Paperback books, magazine, newspapers must be sent directly from the publisher and only via U.S. mail, not UPS or Fed Ex.
• Inmates are permitted a maximum of seven publications.

Family members wishing to pick up an inmate's personal property (for example, wallet, and keys) must have authorization from the inmate. Once authorized, please call 412-350-2267 between the hours of 8:00a.m. and 10:00am. All items will be brought to the front lobby for distribution between 1:45pm and 2:00pm on the same day.

Money Orders

• Write the inmate’s DOC Number on the money order

Returning funds to released inmates: The Cashier's Office is notified when released inmates are waiting in the main lobby for their funds. Released inmates receive a check for any amount owed that's over $10 and they receive cash for any amount owed that's less than $10. In the evening after the banks are closed, the inmate will receive some cash with a check for the remaining balance. For example, if a person is owed $50 dollars, he or she will receive up to $10 in cash with a check for the remaining balance. Hours for paying released inmates are 7:00am – 8:00 pm, Mon thru Fri.

We encourage released individuals to cash their check at the PNC bank located on the corner of Grant Street and Forbes Avenue. This PNC branch accepts the armband as a form of identification to cash checks. Please Note: After 10 days, money will only be turned over to an attorney or the Clerk of Courts.

Scheduling a Visit – When and how often you may visit an inmate depends upon his or her location in the facility.  You will need to know the inmate’s location before you can check the schedules and plan your visit.

The person accompanying a child must present evidence that they are the legal guardian, such as a birth certificate or Court documents.

Process for Visitation Friends and family must register their information at the visitors' window in the main lobby of the jail or by calling 412-350-2036. 412-350-2413 once your information is in the system you will book your visit at ALLEGHENYPA.GTLViSITME.COM. Or by calling 1-855-208-7349. Visits must be booked 2 days in advance up to 7 days. Visitors must report into the visiting visit window 15 minutes before their scheduled visit. The visiting week for all inmates begins on Sunday and ends on Saturday. Inmates in general population are permitted two visits per week, but only one visit per day. Inmates in disciplinary housing are permitted one visit per week. For Baby's: You may take a bottle, a small blanket, one diaper, and wipes that can be in a clear baggie, No cases.

Dress appropriately and follow the institution’s dress code which stipulates:

• Undergarments are required as a condition of any visit
• Shirt and shoes must be worn at all times
• Tops must cover the entire trunk of the body
• Shorts are permitted only if they are modestly cut (no upper thigh or buttocks visible)
• No coats or jackets that are outerwear (suit jackets and cardigans are permitted)
• No hooded clothing or headgear unless worn for religious reasons
• No clothing that is sheer or see-through (mesh) material
• No muscle shirts, halter tops, crop tops, sleeveless or
• Strapless shirts/dresses
• No clothing with excessive pockets, metal, or drawstrings
• No clothing that displays a gang affiliation or is in any way attributable to gang culture
• No clothing that is obscene, racist, or displays sexual content
• No Sleepwear
• No Uniform of any type
• NO RED TOPS!!!
• Ex-Inmates must be out of jail for one full year.

Visiting lobby officers may deny entry into the jail to anyone they deem inappropriately dressed.

• Arrive unimpaired by the use of alcohol or other drugs. A person suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or other drugs will not be permitted to visit.
• Proceed through a metal detecting scan.
• Produce current photo identification that includes date of birth at the visitor's window.
• Receive a visitor's pass in exchange for the photo identification. The photo identification is returned at the conclusion of the visit in exchange for the visitor's pass.
• All contact visitors and other random visitors may be asked to pass through a scanner which detects drugs and drug residue. List of Acceptable Forms of Visitors Identification
