Alpena County Jail basic information to help guide you through what you can do for your inmate while they are incarcerated. The facility's direct contact number: 989-354-9830

This facility is for adult inmates.

The Alpena County Jail is a medium-security detention center located at 320 Johnson St Alpena, MI which is operated locally by the Alpena County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Alpena County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, municipalities, the US Marshal's Service and the Alpena Police Department who do not have their own long-term lock-up.

Inmate Commissary Accounts

All booking and warrant fees must be paid in full before money can be used for commissary items

A jail commissary is provided for inmates to order personal supplies, foodstuffs, and other items. Money may be drawn from the inmate’s personal account to purchase commissary items. A list of items available for purchase and ordering instructions may be requested from Corrections Staff.

After all booking and warrant fees are paid in full the jail will draw 25% from the account to reimburse the County for housing, medical, dental or other fees incurred during incarceration.

There is a $100 per day limit on commissary purchases

Money orders are accepted via mail to the inmate. There is a kiosk machine in our lobby that can be used for bond or to put money on the inmates account with credit/debit card or cash. There is a $2.00 transaction fee to use this machine with cash and a $2.50 or 10% charge to use credit/debit. www.jailatm.com may also be used to put money on an inmates account or post bond.

The inmate trust fund is a repository for inmate money. There is no limit to the amount of money that an inmate may receive into their commissary account. At no time will money in an inmate’s account be transferred to another inmate’s account

Money orders may also be mailed to the inmate.

Mail

Personal mail is any and all mail to an inmate not from inmate’s attorney of record. Inmates have no expectation of privacy for any personal mail.

All inmate mail will be sent through the United States Postal Service.

No mail from another inmate or another correctional facility will be accepted.

All incoming mail will be opened and inspected for items that are not allowed into the jail. Mail containing threats, plans for escape, or advocating violence or otherwise violating jail policy will be censored and may be turned over to a Deputy/Sheriff for evaluation and potential prosecution.

Letters may be sent to inmates daily, addressing it to the inmate with the Alpena County Sheriff’s Office address. No inmate number is needed

Letters cannot contain Glitter, stickers, unknown odor, unknown substance on letter or envelope, must be written in pen (black or blue ink only), pencil or typed, no correspondence to a victim of a crime, stamps, envelopes, and extra paper.

Any mail containing these things will be denied and sent back.

  • 4:00pm-4:45pm

•    Monday Last names starting with A through E
•    Tuesday Last names starting with F through K
•    Wednesday Last names starting with L through P
•    Thursday Last names starting with Q through U
•    Friday Last names starting with V through Z
•    Saturday Trustee visits only 2:30pm-3:30pm and 3:30pm-4:30pm
•    No visits on Sundays

To set up a visit you must call the day of between the hours of 8:00am-11:30am

Visits are on a first come, first served basis

Minor children may only visit with a parent/guardian present and with a birth certificate

All visitors must provide picture ID and nothing other than an ID will be allowed into the visiting area

Examples: No purses, drinks, cellphones, backpacks, etc.

If any of these items are brought into the visit, the visit will be terminated

Appropriate dress is required at all times:

  • Skin tight/Form fitting clothes are not allowed.
  • All visitors must wear undergarments at all times.
  • No see-through clothing allowed.

The visitation schedule may be cancelled or altered for safety/security reasons.

Staff can deny, change, or cancel a visit at any time at their discretion.

All visitors must be registered/scheduled. Visitors not registered/scheduled will not be allowed to visit.
