The inmates housed at Arizona State Prison – ASP Phoenix West – GEO located at 3402 W Cocopah St in Phoenix, AZ are placed according to their custody level and are incarcerated by a private company contracted by a government agency and are paid a per diem or monthly rate, either for each inmate in the facility or for each bed available. The facility is well-trained and well-staffed. This doesn't come without some controversy as the "price of incarceration" is big business and critics claim there is a monetary benefit to keeping people locked up. The flip side is this facility undergoes rigorous inspections and are some of the be maintained in the US.
For inmates that show a willingness to learn new things, there are educational and vocational training programs here that will prepare them for a successful reentry when released.
Arizona State Prison-Phoenix West is a minimum-custody private prison in Phoenix, under contract with the Arizona Department of Corrections to provide custody and substance abuse treatment for 500 adult male inmates who have demonstrated a need for substance or alcohol abuse treatment. The facility opened in April 1996 and is operated and managed by The GEO Group. Staff was recruited from the local community and local vendors were used as much as possible. As a result, the facility contributes significantly to the local economy through salaries and purchase of goods and services.
SCOPE OF WORK: Substance abuse treatment and education are mandated for all at Phoenix West. The facility is licensed as an outpatient facility and its curriculum, the Journeys West Program, was developed specifically for the facility. The program consists of ten individual five-week modules; all based in a cognitive behavioral approach, with its prime focus on DUI education and treatment classes. In addition, GEO provides employability skills, parenting, substance abuse education, and counseling, education, case management, life skills/self-help, facility work programs (both on and off-site), and stress management. GEO assumed operations of ASP-Phoenix West during the acquisition of Correctional Services Corporation (CSC) in November 2005.
FACILITY DESCRIPTION: The 96,200 sq. ft. Arizona State Prison-Phoenix West was designed and built by CSC at a cost of $7 million and completed in 10 months. The dormitory layout provides a 50-bed, double bunked configuration. Each dorm has an adjacent common space or day room and showers to support living activities.

Arizona State Prison – ASP Phoenix West – GEO – Visitation
Visitation periods will be in four-hour blocks each weekend,
starting at 8:00AM to 12:00PM and 12:00PM to 4:00PM.
Phase I inmates – 1 four hour block of visitation on either Saturday or Sunday.
Phase II inmates – 3 four hour blocks of visitation on either Saturday or Sunday.
Phase III inmates – 4 four hour blocks of visitation on either Saturday or Sunday.
Please note: AM BLOCK – No arrivals after 10:00AM. PM BLOCK – No arrivals after 3:00PM.
Non-Contact visitation is by appointment only. Please call the Visitation Office to schedule non-contact visitation 24 hours in advance.
