The ASPC Douglas – Complex Detention (CDU) is a state prison located at 6911 N BDI Blvd in Douglas, AZ in Cochise County. This State – maximum security prison is operated by the Arizona Department of Corrections to hold inmates who have been convicted to and sentenced for a crime in the state of Arizona.
The inmates housed at the institution are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. Arizona's mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.
State facilities provide basic living standards to meet most of the inmate's needs, including dietary, health, fitness, education, religious practices, entertainment, and many others. Conditions in these prisons vary within the AZ DOC depend on many intersecting factors including the age of the buildings, the security level of the inmates and budget.
Arizona State Prison Complex – Douglas is one of 13 prison facilities operated by the Arizona Department of Corrections (ADC). ASPC-Douglas is located adjacent to the Bisbee-Douglas Airport in Douglas, Cochise County, AZ, 250 miles southeast from the state capital of Phoenix, AZ.
The ASPC-Douglas was first opened as the Cochise Correctional Training Facility early in 1984. It now consists of 5 units, the four others are Gila, Eggers, Mohave and the Papago. Built with inmate assistance to the contractor, the first unit to become operational at ASPC-Douglas, was the Maricopa unit. The next was the Mohave unit. Due to prison overcrowding, the Gila unit was built with portable modular housing. In 1984, a law was passed that DUI inmates could not be housed with other inmates. This led to the Papago Unit being purchased from the Desert Inn Motel Company, after which it was converted into a prison unit. And, this Special Detention Unit was also added.
Education – Adult Basic Education (ABE). Many inmates earn their General Equivalency Diploma (GED) while incarcerated. Other programs include Mandated Adult Education and Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE).
