The Calhoun County MI Correctional Center (ICE) is a medium-security detention center located at 185 E Michigan St Battle Creek, MI which is operated locally by the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Calhoun County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, municipalities, the US Marshal's Service and the Battle Creek Police Department who do not have their own long-term lock-up.

The Calhoun County Correctional Facility is a Direct Supervision facility, meaning that corrections officers work in the living areas of the inmates/detainees. The jail is rated for 630 inmates and employs a staff of approximately 120. The local population averages 275-325 inmates/detainees and, in order to offset costs and raise revenue for the County, rents out remaining beds to other cities, counties, and the federal government. The Corrections Division is further responsible for Court and Justice Center Security, as well as the transportation of inmates/detainees to and from Courts and other correctional facilities.

Inmate/Detainee Account Fund – The Calhoun County Sheriff's Office accepts funds for inmates/detainees that will be held in an account. These funds may be used to purchase items from the correction center commissary, pay for medical and other health-related expenses, haircuts, and other items as they come up. You can send funds in the following ways:

If you need information about a detainee that is housed at this facility, you may call (313) 568-6049 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. When you call, please have the individual’s biographical information ready, including first, last and hyphenated names, any aliases he or she may use, date of birth and country of birth.

Detainees cannot receive incoming calls. If you need to get in touch with a detainee to leave an urgent message, you must call (269) 969-6304 and leave the detainee’s full name, alien registration number and your name and telephone number where you can be reached. The detainee will be given your message.

Calhoun County Correctional Facility – Visitation

This a 24-hour / 7-day-a-week operation.

Inmate/detainee visitation takes place during the following scheduled times unless otherwise authorized by the Shift Commander.

• Onsite: Monday – Friday:  7:30am-10:30am, 12:30pm-4:30pm.
• Remote: Daily 7:30am-10:30am, 12:30pm-4:30pm, 7:30pm-9:00pm.

Friends and Family Visits – ICE Detainees

• To ensure adequate time to process visitors through security, all visitors must arrive 45 minutes prior to the scheduled visit time.
• Adult visitors must present a valid, verifiable government-issued identification card to enter the facility.
• Minors who are visiting the facility must be accompanied by an adult guardian (18 years or older). Minors must not be left unaccompanied in the waiting room, visiting room or any other area.  

Attorney Visits – Legal representatives of detainees are authorized to visit their clients during the following hours:

Daily, 7 a.m. – 3 p.m.  There are no restrictions as to the number of legal representatives visits, with the exception of a declared facility emergency.

A list of pro bono (free) legal organizations will be posted in all detainee housing units and other appropriate areas.  This list shall be updated quarterly. If a detainee wishes to see a representative or paralegal from that organization, it is the detainee’s responsibility to contact them for an appointment.

Consular Visits – Consular officials may meet with their detained nationals at any time.  It is requested that prior arrangements be made with the ICE Supervisory Deportation Officer to the extent possible, and that consular officials bring appropriate credentials when they come to the facility. Clergy Visits – Clergy may visit detainees at any time but must make prior arrangements with the Chaplain’s Office.

Visiting Restrictions

• All family or other social visits are Non-contact.
• No firearms or weapons of any kind are permitted in the facility.
• If visitors are or appear to be intoxicated, visitation will not be allowed.
• All visitors are subject to search while in the facility.
• Visitors are not allowed to pass or attempt to pass any items to detainees.
• Visitors are not allowed to carry any items into the visitation area.

Search Procedures (prior to or during all visitations) – All individuals requesting admittance to the facility or the visitation area are subject to a pat-down search of their person, an inspection of their belongings, and a metal scan search. Individuals refusing to cooperate with a reasonable search will not be admitted. No firearms or weapons of any kind are permitted. No electronic devices (cell phones, pagers, radios, etc.) are permitted in the secure areas of this facility.
