The inmates housed at California State Prison, LA located at 44750 60th St W in Lancaster, CA are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.
California State Prison in Los Angeles County (LAC) operated by the CDCR serves as both a long term facility for adult males and as a Reception Center for inmates who need to go through the intake process. Inmates in the reception center are usually housed for only a short term until they are classified and relocated.
Some notable inmates that have served time at LAC are Lawrence Phillips, former NFL running back; Robert Bardo murdered actress Rebecca Schaeffer in 1989, Rene "Boxer" Enriquez, a former Mexican Mafia member turned federal witness. His life s the subject of a book titled "The Black Hand". Loi Khac Nguyen was one of the perpetrators of the 1991 Sacramento hostage crisis for which he was convicted of killing three people; Samuel Little a serial killer convicted of killing three women, though he is suspected of killing as many as 90 in total; Joe Son was an actor and former mixed martial artist; Robert Rozier a former American football defensive end and convicted serial killer who played in the National Football League and Canadian Football League. After leaving football, he became involved with "The Brotherhood", led by Yahweh ben Yahweh. He is currently serving 25 years to life on a conviction for check kiting under a third strike law.
The LAC is a multi-mission institution. This facility houses over 4,000 minimum to maximum security inmates. The institution serves as a Medical hub for Enhanced Outpatient (EOP) and EOP Administrative Segregation levels of Healthcare and also operates a Prison Industry Authority (PIA) Laundry, and soap manufacturing facilities.
The institution serves as a Reentry Hub with programs such as Commercial Plumbing, Commercial Painting, Masonry and Computer Literacy. A Progressive Programming Facility (PPF) was established on Facility "A" in 2000. The PPF was created to create a programming environment, free from violence, illegal drugs, and disruptive behavior.
Internal jobs at California Prison LA County include working in the laundry department/kitchen. Inmates can also take vocational courses to learn cabinet making, carpentry skills, office and computer related skills, plumbing, and custodial skills. Education opportunities for inmates to earn both basic adult education and GED are available. The facility also runs a literacy program to help inmates who may not be able to read. This facility also offers maintenance to the surrounding communities through community service crews.

Institution Details
Productivity and self-improvement opportunities are provided for inmates through academic classes, work programs, religious and self-help groups. LAC was constructed to meet the access requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and has been designated to house Level I, III and IV inmates. The housing of these inmates is accomplished on a Minimum Support Facility (MSF) and four 270 design facilities. LAC also houses inmates who meet the criteria of the Department’s Disability Placement Program (DPP). LAC has a 100 cell standalone Administrative Segregation Unit (ASU) and a Correctional Treatment Center (CTC) where inmates receive professionally supervised health care beyond that normally provided in the community on an out-patient basis. LAC also provides Correctional Clinical Case Management System (CCCMS) and Enhanced Outpatient Program (EOP).
