The Chautauqua County NY Jail (ICE) is a medium-security detention center located at 15 East Chautauqua Ave Mayville, NY which is operated locally by the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Chautauqua County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, municipalities, the US Marshal's Service and the Mayville Police Department who do not have their own long-term lock-up.

Chautauqua County NY Jail – Visitation

The Chautauqua County Jail is a division of the Sheriff’s Office and under the direct responsibility of Sheriff Joseph A Gerace. The Sheriff is elected by the registered voters in the county and pursuant to the New York State Constitution is responsible for the operation of a jail, county court security, and all civil matters. Providing custody and care for the inmates is a colossal task and one of the major functions of the Office of the Sheriff. In order to manage this function, the Sheriff appoints a Warden to be the chief administrative officer of the jail.

The Warden oversees the daily operation of the facility with the support of a management staff of three and six shift supervisors. The Chautauqua County Jail holds both pre-sentence detainees who are awaiting court action and convicted inmates who are sentenced to jail for a specific period of time. The jail also holds NYS Parole Violators, County Probation Violators, and persons accused of civil crimes such as failure to pay child support. The Sheriff's Office accepts inmates from the United States Marshals Office, Immigrations, and Border Patrol for which receives revenue for this service to help defray the cost of running the facility.

Friends and Family Visits

• When you enter into the visiting room, you will take a seat.
• There will be no wandering around the room once seated.
• You will remain seated at all times with both feet on the floor.
• You may briefly hug and kiss at the beginning and end of each visit.
• There will be no physical contact during your visit.
• Children must stay on the visitor side of the bench.
• Children are not permitted to sit on the divider or run around.
• If your child becomes disruptive (crying / screaming excessively) visitor may be asked to step out of the room.
• Nothing shall be brought to visiting including but not limited to papers, property, or candy items.
• Loud, profane, or abusive language will not be tolerated and will be grounds for terminating your visit.
• You may receive no more than two visitors at one time.
• Children count as one visitor, no matter the age.
• No children will be left unattended in the visiting waiting room
• If there is no adult to supervise the children, you will not be able to visit.
• Visitor must wear clothing that would be deemed acceptable by public standards.
• No “overly revealing” shorts, T-shirts, mini skirts, etc.
• Each visiting period is for one hour. 
• There will be no food or candy brought to visiting.
• When Visitor(s) are more than 30 minutes late, detainee will be returned to housing unit.
• Visitors who appears to be sick (coughing, etc.) may be denied the visit.
• Visitors who arrive late  shall wait until the half-time of their visiting session before they will be allowed in.
• Detainee whose visitors are late will have the full hour deducted from their visiting time.
• Compliance with the visiting officer’s requests / orders is expected or the visit may be terminated for that day.

Adult visitors must present a valid, verifiable government-issued identification card to enter the facility.

Minors who are visiting the facility must be accompanied by an adult guardian (18 years or older). Minors must not be left unaccompanied in the waiting room, visiting room or any other area.  

Attorney Visits

Legal representatives of detainees are authorized to visit their clients during the following hours:

Attorneys and/or paralegals may visit detainees seven days a week at any time.  It is preferred if the attorney calls ahead of time to advise the facility of the visit.

A list of pro bono (free) legal organizations will be posted in all detainee housing units and other appropriate areas.  This list shall be updated quarterly. If a detainee wishes to see a representative or paralegal from that organization, it is the detainee’s responsibility to contact them for an appointment.

Consular Visits

Consular officials may meet with their detained nationals at any time.  It is requested that prior arrangements be made with the ICE Supervisory Deportation Officer to the extent possible, and that consular officials bring appropriate credentials when they come to the facility. Clergy Visits

Clergy may visit detainees at any time, but must make prior arrangements with the Chaplain’s Office.

Visiting Restrictions

• All family or other social visits are Non-contact.
• No firearms or weapons of any kind are permitted in the facility.
• If visitors are or appear to be intoxicated, visitation will not be allowed.
• All visitors are subject to search while in the facility.
• Visitors are not allowed to pass or attempt to pass any items to detainees.
• Visitors are not allowed to carry any items into the visitation area.

Search Procedures (prior to or during all visitations)

All individuals requesting admittance to the facility or the visitation area are subject to a pat-down search of their person, an inspection of their belongings, and a metal scan search. Individuals refusing to cooperate with a reasonable search will not be admitted. No firearms or weapons of any kind are permitted. No electronic devices (cell phones, pagers, radios, etc.) are permitted in the secure areas of this facility.
