The Clay County IA Jail is a medium-security detention center located at 3115 W. 4th St Spencer, IA which is operated locally by the Clay County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Clay County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, municipalities, the US Marshal's Service and the Spencer Police Department who do not have their own long-term lock-up.
Clay County IA Jail – Visitation
The Mission of the Clay County Sheriff’s Jail Division is to provide service to the community by insuring the safe and secure incarceration of persons taken into confinement by order of a qualified court or otherwise allowed by law.
Confinement will be humane and constitutional as mandated by the United States Constitution, Federal and State Statues, and applicable case law. The Sheriff of Clay County upholds the philosophy of confinement being punishment in and of itself.
Rules of conduct and behavior of inmates, as promulgated by the Iowa Jail Standards, will be observed. Professionally trained personnel will staff the division. Every effort will be made to meet both the physical and mental needs of all inmates.
