CT DOC – Gates Correctional Institution – Niantic Annex – Visitation

The J. B. Gates Correctional Institution specializes in the delivery of programs which are designed and structured to address those factors responsible for the criminal behavior of its offender population through services that meet the physical, developmental and spiritual needs of the offenders.

The Gates Correctional Institution is a level 2, minimum-security pre-release institution with a focus on education and addiction programming designed to support the successful community reintegration of the offender population. Among the programming offered to inmates are Adult Basic Education, Pre GED and GED classes, college courses, and instruction in commercial cleaning, graphic arts. The Addiction Service Department offers a Tier 3, inpatient substance abuse program, in addition to AA and NA meetings.

The Gates Correctional Institution also employs more than 500 inmates at various jobs including the Community Service detail. This detail consists of up to 14-inmates who are supervised by two correction officers. The details work in the community assisting various non-profit organizations in completing construction, renovations and other projects.

The facility is also home to the Second Chance Corral, a partnership with the Connecticut Department of Agriculture which provides restorative shelter for abused farm animals which are cared for by the inmate population.
