Cumberland County NC Detention Center basic information to help guide you through what you can do for your inmate while they are incarcerated. The facility's direct contact number: 910-672-5601
This facility is for adult inmates.
The Cumberland County NC Detention Center is a medium-security detention center located at 204 Gillespie St in Fayetteville, NC. This county jail is operated locally by the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Cumberland County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, municipalities, the US Marshal's Service and the Fayetteville Police Department who do not have their own long-term lock-up.
There are new detainees delivered to the jail daily, you can see arrest records here. Some are released after putting up bail, are released to a pretrial services caseload, are placed under supervision by a probation agency, or are released on their own recognizance with an agreement to appear in court. If there is no release, the inmate must wait here at the jail for their court appearance as a guest of the County, getting a bed and three square meals.
Trustees are inmates who work in the jail as cooks, as orderlies for the staff, in the laundry or in the commissary. The trustees are paid a very small amount for their time and some jail gives the trustees a few days off their sentence in exchange for their work.
When an inmate arrives in jail they are put together in a large holding cell with other inmates in the intake. While in intake they are under heightened observation. Violent and out of control inmates are segregated.
Can I Get Work Release?
Work release is when you are released from jail during the day so that you can go to work. At the end of the day, you return to jail for the night. There are a number of requirements to be able to get into the work-release program. Most programs require your employer to fill out some paperwork. If you want to get into the work release program then apply prior to being sentenced to jail. This will minimize the amount of time you spend in jail waiting to get into the program.

The inmate property – The inmate's property is inventoried at booking and placed into self-seal, tamper-resistant plastic bags. In most cases, this makes it unnecessary for jail staff to further handle an inmate’s personal property. After an inmate’s cash has been accepted, it is placed in the inmate’s account available to the inmate to purchase commissary items and for other purposes. Any unused funds are returned to the inmate upon discharge from custody. Before leaving the booking room, inmates are required to exchange personal clothing for jail clothing. Their personal clothing is bagged and stored securely until their release. Questions regarding such property should be directed to the arresting agency. Inmates receive basic hygiene items free of charge when first entering custody.
All releases from the Cumberland County Jail shall be the result of an inmate posting bond, a court order, completion of a sentence, payment of a fine and court costs, a teletype from another agency releasing their hold, or transfer of the inmate to the custody of another agency authorized by law to assume custody of that inmate. Releases may occur at any time of the day or night. Paperwork and other information in the inmate’s file receive a comprehensive and thorough review during the release process. You should know that this is time-consuming and must be carefully done to ensure public safety. A file review occurs in the order in which the file was received by the release control officer.
Inmates serving a sentence are generally released between 6:00 AM and 9:00 PM on the day of discharge unless the court makes other instructions.
Some inmates required to be released to adult probation; drug treatment and other programs must be picked up by a representative from that program. Inmates with charges from other jurisdictions are turned over to officers from the other jurisdiction when all Cumberland County business has been completed.
For security purpose, jail staff members are forbidden from discussing when an inmate will be transported from the facility.
Inmate clothing and property in the custody of the jail will be returned, as will any money left in the inmate’s account, at the time of release.
Inmates may be transferred to other institutions for a number of reasons: these include court, medical treatment, to serve a sentence, safety of the inmate, etc. In order to protect the safety of the inmates and staff, transfers are not discussed with the public or media.
FUNERALS – Inmates may, with special permission, be taken to a private viewing or visitation following the death of a close family member. Such visits only occur with the permission of the Courts and the Sheriff’s Office following a thorough security review of the location and the inmate’s record; including any outside information available. It is the inmate’s attorney’s responsibility to secure the court order. Visitations following a death must be within Cumberland County and will be done at unannounced times.
