Escambia County FL Jail basic information to help guide you through what you can do for your inmate while they are incarcerated. The facility's direct contact number: 850-436-9831
This facility is for adult inmates.
The Escambia County FL Jail is a medium-security detention center located at 1700 W Leonard St Pensacola, FL which is operated locally by the Escambia County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Escambia County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, municipalities, the US Marshal's Service and the Pensacola Police Department who do not have their own long-term lock-up.
Escambia County Corrections and its team of correctional officers and support personnel are responsible for the care, custody and control of over 1,300 inmates. These inmates are housed in the Main Jail on "L" Street, Work Release Center and Walton County Jail. The vast majority of these inmates are awaiting trial on charges ranging from violation of probation to murder. Annually, Escambia County Corrections books and releases over 15,000 people.
The Main Jail facility has 815 beds and employs over 450 in the main jail & work release security, health services, booking & transportation, central support services, training and citizen liaison, professional standards and accreditation, and contract services divisions.
On April 29, 2014, the basement of the Central Booking and Detention Center experienced torrential rainfall which flooded the entire basement, and as a result, caused an explosion that occurred in the early morning hours of April 30. The explosion resulted in the catastrophic loss of the facility and it was condemned. Due to the loss of this facility, Escambia County Corrections lost over 600 beds and inmates are now being housed at the County Work Release Center, Road Prison as well as at the Walton County Jail to make up for that loss of bed space.
The only county-operated work camp in Florida, the Escambia County Work Annex provides a part of the manual labor workforce for Escambia County's Road Department, Solid Waste, Parks and Recreation, Animal Shelter, and Facilities Maintenance. Supervised by road corrections officers, our work crews perform various tasks for the county such as clearing rights of way, grounds maintenance, drainage projects and other aspects of road and stormwater maintenance. Thea work annex performs all the typical activities associated with incarceration of inmates including internal security, administration, food service and building and grounds maintenance. In an effort to minimize food expenditures and work toward self-sufficiency, we use inmate labor in our farming, hydroponics and aquaculture programs. They offer re-entry programs such as a welding program where an inmate can earn national certifications in various aspects of welding, G.E.D., life skills/parenting class, 40 days of purpose, and A.A.
On Aug. 10, 2017, the Escambia County Board of County Commissioners voted to select Whitesell-Green/Caddell as the design-build entity who will oversee the building our new jail facility. It is expected to be completed in 2020.
