Essex County NJ Correctional Facility (ICE) basic information to help guide you through what you can do for your inmate while they are incarcerated. The facility's direct contact number: 973-274-7500
This facility is for adult inmates.
The Essex County NJ Correctional Facility (ICE) is a medium-security detention center located at 354 Doremus Ave Newark, NJ which is operated locally by the Essex County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Essex County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, municipalities, the US Marshal's Service and the Newark Police Department who do not have their own long-term lock-up.
The Essex County Department of Corrections has evolved into a complex organization with many divisions and sub-divisions and actually operates outside of Essex County Sheriff's Office, although they book inmates here. These units have been trained in specialized areas of law enforcement. The mission of the Department of Corrections is to ensure that all persons committed to our County’s correctional institutions are confined with the level of custody necessary to protect the public while providing care, discipline, training, and treatment in preparation for reintegration into the community.
Inmates are allowed to send and receive an unlimited number of letters. There shall be no restriction on the length, language, or context of letters or to whom an inmate may write except when there is a clear threat to the institution. All incoming mail, letters or parcels will be examined/handled by Correctional Facility officials for cash, checks, money orders, and contraband, but not read except when such is deemed a threat to the security of the institution or used for illegal activity. Inmates shall be permitted to receive books, magazines, newspapers or other printed matter mailed directly from the publisher or reputable book store.
