The inmates housed at FL DOC – Blackwater River Correctional Facility – GEO located at 5914 Jeff Ates Rd in Milton, FL are placed according to their custody level and are incarcerated by a private company contracted by a government agency and are paid a per diem or monthly rate, either for each inmate in the facility or for each bed available. The facility is well-trained and well-staffed. This doesn't come without some controversy as the "price of incarceration" is big business and critics claim there is a monetary benefit to keeping people locked up. The flip side is this facility undergoes rigorous inspections and are some of the be maintained in the US.

For inmates that show a willingness to learn new things, there are educational and vocational training programs here that will prepare them for a successful reentry when released.

This facility was established in 1995 to house adult male inmates. It is operated by GEO Group, Inc. under contract with the Department of Management Services.

SCOPE OF WORK: The facility provides academic and vocational programs as well as medical care, substance abuse programs, counseling, and life skills training opportunities.

FACILITY DESCRIPTION: The design includes housing, administration, programming space, and support services. The facility is designed in a campus layout. Each housing building incorporates therapeutic living communities with medical, multipurpose, group and individual counseling rooms and recreation areas. The Blackwater River Correctional and Rehabilitation Facility was designed and constructed to the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) requirements. The facility achieved Gold Certification from the Council in recognition of its sustainable design.

Directions – From I-10 near Milton take Exit 31 (FL-87 North) toward Milton/Navarre for approximately 1.2 miles to Caroline St (FL-10 E/US-90 E.) Turn right on Caroline St and go approximately 1.1 miles to Jeff Ates Rd. Turn left on Jeff Ates Rd. The facility will be on the right.
