The inmates housed at Macon State Prison located at 2728 Hwy 49 S in Oglethorpe, GA are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.
Macon State Prison is a closed custody institution that houses approximately 1762 adult male inmates who are housed in either an open dormitory, single cells, or double cells (cells with two beds per cell). Work crews at this facility include landscaping, maintenance, laundry and food service for the institution. Inmates have various programs designed to give them an education or vocational skill. Academic courses offered at Macon State Prison include a GED course, adult basic education, and literacy classes. Vocational skills taught at this institution include culinary arts, computers, barbering, custodial and building maintenance, landscaping, clerical worker, horticulture, and customer service.
MISSION – Ensure public safety and effectively house offenders while operating a safe and secure facility. House close security inmates. This is a Tier I & II facility.

HOUSING – Consists of nine buildings each divided into two separate units with 48 cells per unit. One building's unit houses 46 isolation beds & two safe cells and the other unit houses 48 double occupancy cells of segregation beds and Fast Track Unit Open Dormitory with four Pods which consists of 64 beds in each. Ten additional beds are at the Fire Station. Eight Beds Infirmary. This facility also houses a C.E.R.T. Team, Tactical Squad and a Fire Station.
