The inmates housed at Wilcox State Prison located at 470 S Broad St in Abbeville, GA are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.
Wilcox State Prison is a medium-security state institution that houses about 1,830 adult male inmates who have committed a felony in Georgia. Inmates are housed in an open dormitory setting in multiple buildings. Inmates sleep in either double or triple bunk beds. Work crews are assigned to selected inmates, the types of work they may participate in provide general labor to the surrounding county agencies. Inmates can work supervised in the department of transportation, fire station, farmers market, doing various duties such as laundry, custodial and maintenance work. Academic courses here include an adult basic education, literacy, and the ability of an inmate to earn their GED. Counseling is available, where inmates can receive support for substance abuse, sex offender rehabilitation, and re-entry preparation. The Chaplains office offers inmates access to various worship and prayer services as well as additional counseling.
MISSION – Ensure public safety and effectively house offenders while operating a safe and secure facility by housing medium security, general population inmates who may not be suitable for a county facility due to their offense or physical limitations. Host facility for the Turner Residential Substance Abuse Treatment Facility.
HOUSING – Consists of four and one-half buildings with 120 per dorm in 24 double-bunked and 24 triple-bunked cells each. Three housing units consist of four open dormitories, two housing approximately 48 per dorm and the other housing approximately 94 per dorm. There are 22 isolation cells and 24 double-bunked segregation cells. This facility also houses a C.E.R.T. Team, Tactical Squad and a Fire Station.
