The Geary County Detention Center is a medium-security detention center located at 826 N Franklin St Junction City, KS which is operated locally by the Geary County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. The Corrections Division is responsible for managing all functions related to prisoners and jail operations. Prisoner management primarily includes care, custody, and control, intake and release, housing, and transportation of prisoners. In addition to these responsibilities, the department provides a wide array of quality services including medical, mental health, food, counseling, recreation, religious, and education.
The original jail was built in 1950 and housed 21 inmates. In 1986, an expansion was completed and increased the number of beds to 82. In October of 2006 another section was added. This expansion was opened in May of 2009. The jail now has 160 beds.
The inmates are allowed to purchase calling cards while in custody which allows them phone access.
