This facility is for adult inmates.

The Gilpin County Detention Division is a medium-security detention center located at 2960 Dory Hill Road, Suite 300 Black Hawk, CO which is operated locally by the Gilpin County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Gilpin County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, municipalities, the US Marshal's Service and the Black Hawk Police Department who do not have their own long-term lock-up.

The Gilpin County Detentions Division consists of the Jail, Court Security, Inmate programs and work release programs. The Gilpin County Justice Center was opened in September 1995. Detentions were the first to move into the new building with patrol moving in the second phase and then dispatch in the third phase.

The Detention Facility can house 55 inmates. When construction of this building was being done the county also received plans for expansion of the jail, if the need arises. This expansion would bring the housing capacity to approximately 75 inmates. The Detentions Facility has a staff of 17 full time sworn employees, 1 part-time sworn employee, 3 full-time civilian Community Service Officers, and 3 kitchen staff.

The kitchen provides meals for the inmates as well as the senior citizens of Gilpin County. The kitchen staff prepares meals for the meals-on-wheels program as well as having luncheons in the community room at the rec center.

The county contracts the medical care of inmates with a private company, which provides 24/7 coverage for the healthcare of the inmates. We utilize the doctors and nurses in routine and emergency care, however, if it is a life-threatening emergency we call the Gilpin County Ambulance and transport the inmate to a hospital.

Detention Facility Philosophy

The purpose of the Gilpin County Detention Facility is to protect the public by incarcerating, in a cost-effective manner, accused and adjudicated adult offenders in a safe, secure and humane facility in order to:

Ø Assure court appearances of those accused of unlawful behavior prior to adjudication.

Ø Administer court-ordered sanctions to those convicted of crimes.

Ø Participate in the coordination of the criminal justice system.

The philosophy of the Gilpin County Detention Facility is based on the following assumptions:

Ø Incarceration is punishment, in and of itself.

Ø All inmates and staff will be held accountable for their actions.

Ø The opportunity for community integration for accused and adjudicated offenders will be offered through humane programs and services.

Correctional management and personnel of the Gilpin County Detention Facility, trained to professional standards, are committed to operating the facility to assure the preservation of the basic human rights of the incarcerated as prescribed by the Constitution of the United States and the State of Colorado, the federal laws, and the policies and procedures of the Gilpin County Sheriff’s Office.

Telephones:

• If a conflict or abusive language is used on the phone at any time the phone call will be terminated, whether in the booking area or in the pods.

• Inmates have access to the telephones before being placed in the general population. This is a collect call only.

• Inmates will have access to telephones in the day room between the hours of 8 AM – 11:30 PM.

• All telephone calls are collect calls only, or monies may be transferred from the inmate account to the phone account for phone credits.

• No messages will be taken for any inmate unless it is a life and death emergency or serious illness emergency. The emergency will be verified.

Note: Unwanted collect calls from inmates should be denied when the call is received. Continuous or harassing phone calls, made by inmates, should be reported to the Gilpin County Sheriff’s Office at 303-582-3576.

To make commissary deposits 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, you may use the Stellar Teller machine in the lobby of the Sheriff's Office (at this time the Teller only accepts cash). You may also send a money order or cashier's check by standard mail to the jail.

Saturday:     9:00 AM – 11:00 AM
                    2:00 PM – 4:00 PM

Sunday:       9:00 AM – 11:00 AM
                    2:00 PM – 4:00 PM

Tuesday:      6:00 PM – 8:00 PM

Only visitors with a picture ID card or drivers license will be allowed to visit an inmate.  

If you bring a minor to visit you must be the parent or legal guardian and stay with the minor child at all times during the visit. 

You may not take any personal items into the visitation room – lockers are provided to keep your personal items secure.

You may bring the following items for an inmate:

• White underclothes
• White socks 
• White T-shirt – long or short sleeves 
• White long underwear 

NOTE:  Any clothing accepted must be completely white; this is for laundry purposes.  

We will not accept anything with color on any part of the clothing. 

You may leave money for an inmate; you may make commissary deposits using the Stellar Teller machine in the lobby (at this time the Teller only accepts cash). You may also send a money order or cashier's check by standard mail to the jail.

Only cash or money orders will be accepted and the monies will be placed on the inmate's account. The inmate will sign for the money and get a receipt. 

Approved medicine or medically required items will be accepted 24 hours a day. 

Monies or white underclothing will be accepted only between the hours of 8 AM – 5 PM, Monday through Friday and during visitation hours. (Unless the monies are for bonding purposes; you may bond a person out of jail 24 hours a day.) 

No books, magazines, candy, shampoo, etc. will be accepted from anyone for inmates.
