Harrison County MS Detention Center basic information to help guide you through what you can do for your inmate while they are incarcerated. The facility's direct contact number: 228-265-9118
This facility is for adult inmates.
The Harrison County MS Detention Center is a medium-security detention center located at 10451 Larkin Smith Dr Gulfport, MS which is operated locally by the Harrison County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Harrison County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, municipalities, the US Marshal's Service and the Gulfport Police Department who do not have their own long-term lock-up.
The detention center houses a wide array of detainees, including felons, misdemeanor offenders, males, females, juveniles charged as adults, state prisoners, federal prisoners and persons awaiting commitment to mental health facilities. Approximately eighty percent of the inmate population consists of those who are pre-trial status.
Incoming inmates will submit to a complete search, and dress in a clean uniform. During the booking process, staff members will ask you questions to assist with assessing your health needs and schedule temporary housing. This is for your health and safety. You are expected to tell the truth and cooperate. When you are transferred from the booking area to a housing unit you will be issued an Identification Wristband. You are required to wear your Identification Wristband on your wrist at all times. Prior to arrival at the cell block, you will be issued a mattress, blanket, two (02) sheets, two (02) jail uniforms, undergarments for women (plain white non-thong panties and plain white no wire bras for women) slide shoes, bath towel, cup, spork and hygiene items. Any other items needed must be submitted by a request form via kiosk.
Recently the detention center has undergone major renovations and capital improvements. All cell doors and locking mechanisms have been replaced and upgraded, control panel technology has been improved and new perimeter detection and closed-circuit television systems have been installed. These improvements and upgrades, totaling more than 10 million dollars, have transformed the detention center into a state of the art facility, thus ensuring a much-improved level of safety for staff, inmates and ultimately the public.
Inmate Work Center – The inmate work center, located on Lorraine Road, houses between 140 and 160 sentenced state prisoners. These inmates work at various job sites throughout the county and its municipalities, saving the county's taxpayers several million dollars annually. The inmate work center has proven to be an extremely valuable and cost-effective resource for the county, providing a labor force that is highly skilled in a variety of job classes. This program is operated with the assistance and cooperation of the Mississippi Department of Corrections, and it is an excellent example of the best kind of local and state government partnership.
County Farm – The county farm has been in a state of decline for a number of years, but with the cooperation of the Harrison County Board of Supervisors, plans are being implemented to resurrect the operation and equip it with both the tools and inmate power to transform it once again into a successful farming operation.
Inmates admitted to the Harrison County Adult Detention Center or returned for court, parole, probation, intensive supervision program, earned release supervision, or suspension violations are first assigned to the classification’s section. Upon completion of initial processing, inmates are transferred into the housing units. Prior to completion of initial classification, all inmates are treated as “C” custody (close supervision) or “D” custody (maximum confinement) until they receive an assignment from the Initial Classification’s Hearing Officer and are transferred from the classification’s section to a permanent resident housing unit. During Admission and Orientation, inmates are given an introduction to the initial classification process and are advised to review a copy of the HCADC Inmate Handbook provided on the kiosk.
