IA DOC – Anamosa State Penitentiary (ASP) basic information to help guide you through what you can do for your inmate while they are incarcerated. The facility's direct contact number: 319-462-3504
This facility is for adult inmates.
The inmates housed at Anamosa State Penitentiary located at 406 N High St in Anamosa, IA are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.
The ASP is a maximum-medium security state prison institution that houses about 950 inmates. Programs are offered which provide opportunities to acquire academic and vocational skills. Through a contract with Kirkwood Community College, offenders may pursue educational opportunities to include adult literacy, earning a GED, or taking classes leading to an Associate of Arts degree. Iowa Prison Industries offers a variety of job skills training in its License Plates, Custom Woodworking, Braille Transcription, Graphic Arts, Metal Furniture, Sign, Cleaning Products, Warehouse, and Farming operations. Inmates with substance abuse problems may participate in a substance abuse program licensed by the Department of Public Health, and the counseling staff conducts other specialized treatment groups.
The Luster Heights Work Camp is a satellite facility under the control of ASP. The facility houses 85 inmates and is located in the Yellow River State Forest in northeast Iowa (Allamakee County). The camp also offers a substance abuse program licensed by the Iowa Department of Public Health. Offenders assigned to this facility work for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources in the forest and for several communities in the area. In addition, they work on community service projects in the camp.
Notorious former inmates who were housed here include John Wayne Gacy and Robert Hansen, both were serial killers, but were housed at this institution for crimes other than murder. Oddly enough, this prison has a museum open to the public located just outside of the prison walls that is dedicated to the history of the facility.
