IA DOC – Mt. Pleasant Correctional Facility (MPCF) basic information to help guide you through what you can do for your inmate while they are incarcerated. The facility's direct contact number: 319-385-9511

This facility is for adult inmates.

The inmates housed at Mt. Pleasant Correctional located at 1200 E Washington St in Mt. Pleasant, IA are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.

The MPCF is a medium-security state prison institution, which houses about 862 male inmates. It is designed programmatically for the treatment of male offenders with treatable character disorders and substance abuse problems. The programs focus specifically on sex offenders and substance abusers with a substance abuse program licensed by the State Department of Public Health and are designed for preparing the inmates for the transition back to the community. In addition, MPCF inmates are offered educational and vocational programs, as well as social skills classes, to prepare them for their eventual return to the community setting. Through a contract with Southeastern Community College offenders can receive their HiSET degree, literacy certificates, vocational education, and special education. MPCF offers an apprenticeship program with 14 job skills training, such as welding, cabinetry, painting, etc.

Iowa Prison Industries has a building on grounds that employ an average of 33 inmates. These offenders work 8 to 10 hours a day, with the main focus on building dorm furniture for the 3 universities in Iowa.

A separate unit for approximately 100 female inmates with special programming needs opened in 1999. Fifty-one staff work in the women’s unit.
