The Iberia Parish Work Release Facility is a medium-security detention center located at 3701 Broken Arrow Road New Iberia, LA which is operated locally by the Iberia Parish County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Iberia Parish County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, municipalities, the US Marshal's Service and the New Iberia Police Department who do not have their own long-term lock-up.
The Iberia Parish Jail is a facility which holds a capacity of up to 520 prisoners. These inmates range from New Iberia City inmates, Iberia Parish inmates, State Prisoners, Federal Prisoners, as well as prisoners for other local agencies. The Iberia Parish Jail staffs approximately 84 employees who oversee the daily operations of the jail, secure the inmates 24 hours a day, as well as perform various tasks, which will be outlined below:
- The Iberia Parish Jail has a wide variety of functions that serve not only the inmates who are residing in the facility, but which helps out the City of New Iberia as well as Iberia Parish.
- One of these functions is our Inmate Labor Program. The Iberia Parish Jail appoints more than 160 inmates throughout the City of New Iberia and the parish. These inmates are assigned to the Iberia Parish Government, New Iberia City Park, New Iberia City Barn, Iberia Sewer District, Jeanerette Public Works, Loreauville Public Works, SugArena, as well as other agencies throughout the parish. These inmates perform a multitude of tasks such as performing maintenance work, cutting grass, garbage pick-up, etc. The inmate labor comes at no cost to any of the agencies who utilize them.
- The Iberia Parish Jail also uses inmate labor to help maintain the daily operations of the jail. We utilize our inmates to maintain the cleanliness of our facility, the inmates are used to maintain the entire vehicle fleet of the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office, inmates are responsible for much of the construction that happens at the jail and throughout the department. Further, we utilize inmate labor to prepare meals for the prisoners at IPJ. Crews of 36 inmates work shifts in preparing over 1,500 meals per day, as well as assisting in serving the meals.
- Located on the grounds of the Iberia Parish Jail is an approximate 50 acre garden. This garden is maintained by IPSO personnel as well as inmates. Crops that are grown by the Iberia Parish Jail are used to help feed the inmates who are incarcerated. Crops that are not used by the facility are often sold to local markets, or even donated to local non-profit organizations, such as the St. Francis Diner in New Iberia. The garden is active throughout most of the year, with crops being planted by season.
