This facility is for adult inmates.
The inmates housed at Stateville Minimum located at 16830 IL-53 in Joliet, IL are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.
Stateville Minimum Security state prison which opened on March 1925 and currently has an operational capacity of about 385 adult male inmates in two units. The facility is adjacent to the Stateville Correctional Center, a 1,109 inmate capacity for adult males that require maximum security housing. It is also adjacent to the Northern Reception and Classification Center (NRC) for about 1800 inmates.
Stateville's mission is to encourage and promote a climate of safe and secure conditions in which offenders and staff can develop positive attitudes and encourage work and program opportunities and experiences that guide offenders toward reintegration into the community.
Stateville Minimum Security Unit consists of a multi-purpose building for recreational and educational programs, offender dining room, and two housing units that can house up to 384 offenders. Offenders assigned to MSU perform various work assignments throughout the NRC, Stateville Proper and MSU.

Minimum security visits are 8:00-2:00 pm (weekends and holidays)
General population and protective custody inmate visits are limited to two hours on weekdays and one hour on weekends and holidays. All segregation inmate visits are limited to one hour.
Visitors to any correctional facility will be required to produce photo identification and verification of date of birth. Please be sure to bring 2 forms of identification with you; these would include a current photo ID such as a driver’s license, a state ID card, government ID card, military ID/driver’s license, or acceptable documentation of non-U.S. citizenship including a current Passport, or Visa, documentation must contain the visitor’s date of birth. Expired forms of identification will not be accepted. Visitors will also be required to provide vehicle information and other pertinent data, such as government identification, official credentials, attorney registration, and or law student certification.
