The Johnson County IN Jail is a medium-security detention center located at 1091 Hospital Rd
Franklin, IN which is operated locally by the Johnson County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Johnson County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, municipalities, the US Marshal's Service and the Franklin Police Department who do not have their own long-term lock-up.

Commissary Money – The Jail staff can accept money orders or cashier’s checks for commissary. The money orders or cashier’s checks must be mailed to the Sheriff’s Office. They cannot be hand delivered to the jail. The money orders or cashier’s checks should be made payable to the inmate and MUST bear the “name number” or it cannot be accepted. If you do not know the inmate “name number” call the Jail at (317) 346-4717 or (317) 346-4626. Do not send cash!

Mailing Procedure – All correspondence, including money orders, must have a complete return name and addressed in the format above. Be certain to have your return address in the upper left-hand corner of the envelope (return address must be handwritten and not a mailing label). This will ensure the return of the letter in case the inmate has left our facility. Please, do not place any stickers or glitter on the outside of the envelope.

All mail, with the exception of “legal mail”, Any and all mail can be opened by staff, but those listed as legal, public officials and media are opened in front of the inmate for inspection for contraband inspection only, no reading aloud.

Mail is always scanned and inspected for contraband, obscenity and other rule violations.

Assume that everything you write will be read by jail staff and can and will be used against you or the inmate in court.

Never write anything about the inmate’s court case you wouldn’t want to be read aloud in court.

Mail is considered by the jail to be a privilege. Any violations of the mail policies can result in the inmate’s mail privileges being suspended.

The introduction of contraband by you into the jail through the mail could result in criminal charges being filed against both you and the inmate.

Examples of Contraband:

• Drugs, weapons, hazardous material, etc
• Stamps, stickers, stationary, envelopes, post-its, etc
• Staples, paper, clips, metal, plastic, laminations, balloons, and jewelry
• Musical greeting cards
• Altered mail such as perfumed or lipstick covered
• Paper with any type of stains such as grease
• News clippings
• Crayon, felt tip or painted drawings

All letters must be on WHITE paper. No colored paper will be accepted.

Photographs

• Photos should not exceed 4 inches high x 6 inches wide.
• Send no more than five photos at one time
• Polaroid Photos are prohibited
• Photos of weapons are prohibited
• Photos of drugs, the consumption of drugs or alcohol are prohibited
• Photos of lewd behavior or people exhibiting too much skin are prohibited

Publications – Books must be sent directly from a bookstore or publisher and must be new. Used books will be returned. Inmates may have up to five (5) books in their cell. Books must be 8 1/2 X 11 or smaller and no thicker than 2 inches. “No hardbound books will be accepted” Bibles must also be softbound.

Magazines, newspapers or other periodicals may only come as a subscription from the publisher via the United States Postal Service. Inmates are allowed a maximum of two subscriptions. It is the inmate’s responsibility to cancel the subscription when released. Only one newspaper is allowed per inmate, and they must be sent from the publisher.

Receiving of Mail – Mail is received five days a week, Monday through Friday, except holidays.

Restrictions – The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office Jail Division and its employees work diligently in assisting all people who require our assistance and or our services. With our growing population of inmates and the many services that we offer, there comes a time when we must make changes in order to be more efficient in our day to day duties. We must always look for ways to manage our time and to perform those duties without certain interruptions. To maintain a high level of “Safety and Security” at the Jail we are restricting certain activities that occur at certain times.

During the day there are normal activities that must take place at certain times. The Jail will restrict activities during the following times:

• 5:00am to 7:00am Morning
• 11:00am to 1:00pm Afternoon
• 5:00pm to 7:00pm Evening

There will be no attorney visits, bonding, or any other type of activity that will involve inmate movement at the times listed above unless the court ordered specifying a certain time that an interview must be conducted. Inmates will continue to be received and processed into the facility as well as released during these times, although other activities will be restricted as listed in this document. There will be exceptions made in extreme circumstances.

Male Inmate Visitation:

Last names beginning with A-L: Saturday, 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Last names beginning with M-Z: Sunday, 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

• All inmates receive one (1) twenty-minute visit.
• Visitors for male inmates must be signed in before the 4:00 p.m. cut off time.
• If there is more than one visitor for an inmate, make certain that all visitors are signed in for the same time block, because inmates are only allowed one (1) twenty-minute visit on the visitation day.
• Property items for inmates cannot be dropped off during their visitation.
• When an inmate wants to release items to a family member or friend, a property release form must be filled out by the inmate. Only inmates sentenced to the Department of Corrections are allowed to release all personal property.
• Special visits are to be approved by a Sergeant. Only one (1) special visit is permitted per month. To request a special visit you must call (317) 346-4627.
• Medication prescriptions from an inmate’s doctor can be brought to the Jail Office and they will be given to the Jail’s nurse.

Female Inmate Visitation:

Saturday, 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.

• All inmates receive one (1) twenty-minute visit.
