The Kootenai County Jail is a medium-security detention center located at 5500 N Government Wy Coeur d’Alene, ID which is operated locally by the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Kootenai County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, municipalities, the US Marshal's Service and the Coeur d’Alene Police Department who do not have their own long-term lock-up.

The Jail Bureau consists of the Custody Division and Services Division. The Custody Division is responsible for the care and custody of incarcerated prisoners. This includes, but is not limited to, delivery of meals, ensuring appropriate housing assignments, distribution of medication, prisoner transport, delivery of incoming and outgoing mail, and random prisoner and housing area searches.

The Services Division is responsible for food preparation, Inmate Commissary, inmate medical treatment, the Inmate Worker Program, the Work Release Program, the Sheriff’s Community Labor Program, and facility maintenance. Additionally, the Services Division sustains a Chaplain Corps which is responsible for counseling of inmates, and rehabilitation resources for the inmate population.

The Pierce Clegg Work Release Center oversees inmates sentenced to the Work Release Program and the Sheriff’s Community Labor Program. The Work Release Program is an alternative incarceration program which allows an inmate who is sufficiently trusted and monitored to leave confinement to continue working at their current place of employment and return to the Work Release Center after completion of their shift to serve their jail time.

The Jail’s Medical Office is staffed by a Nurse Practitioner, a Registered Nurse, and several Licensed Practical Nurses and Medical Assistants. They are responsible for all inmate medical care. The Jail’s Kitchen is responsible for preparing all inmate meals. This includes breakfast, lunch, dinner and all special medical and religious meals. The Chaplain Corps of the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office is responsible for planning and implementation of programs such as Parenting Skills, Recovery Programs, Vocational Education, Drug Awareness, as well as keeping the book carts full with reading material. They also volunteer their time to address the many religious needs of inmates on a group basis as well as one-on-one counseling.

BOOKS – All books must be paperback and can be accepted only if sent from the publisher or book store.
Magazines are prohibited.
INCOMING MAIL
– Must list the first and last name (and address) of the sender and the intended receiver.
– Improperly addressed mail will be returned.
– All mail is inspected and scanned by jail staff.
– Inmates may receive written letters and standard photographs.
– Envelopes should not have any stickers or tape including address labels.
ITEMS NOT ALLOWED
– Polaroid photographs. Photographs cannot be larger than 4X6 – InmateAid photos are approved!
– Cash, money orders and checks
– Gifts of any kind
– Clothing or toiletries
– Personal Items
– Stamps, envelopes and blank sheets of paper
– Music greeting cards
– Perfumed, liquid stained paper or heavy ink of any kind.
– Glitter, glue, colored pencils, markers, tape, stickers, crayon markings.
– Printed literature not sent directly by the publisher, torn copies from a book, puzzle books and other similar items.
– Bubble wrap envelopes.
Mail content must be thoroughly understandable by jail staff. Mail containing images or depictions of sexual situations, nudity, or sexual acts is prohibited. In addition, mail cannot contain:
• Intimidation or harassment
• Gang-related writings or drawings
• Messages (codes) that are not easily understood
• Plans that violate state, local, federal laws, or jail rules
• Plans to send contraband (such as drugs) into or out of the jail
At the discretion of jail staff, mail containing unauthorized references or material may be refused, confiscated, destroyed, placed in the inmate's property, or returned to the sender. No mail may be sent through a third party. Inmates are not allowed to send or receive mail from another inmate in any jail/prison.

Kootenai County Jail – Visitation

Current visiting hours start at 7:00 AM and the last visit starts at 9:00 PM.

• No visits will occur between 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM and 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM.
• Each visit will be 30 minutes in duration. 
• You may schedule your visit with inmates up to one week in advance by using the kiosk in the jail lobby, or by going to telmate.com
• Visiting sessions are 30 minutes in duration.
• Each inmate is allowed two free visits during the week (Monday through Sunday).
• Additional visits may be purchased.
• All visits (except visits with attorneys) are recorded and may be monitored by jail staff at any time. Any violation of visiting rules may result in cancellation of the visit and disciplinary action.

Visiting rules are posted in the lobby and on Telmate’s website.  The rules are strictly enforced.
