This facility is for adult inmates.
The inmates housed at Winfield Correctional Facility located at 1806 Pinecrest Cir in Winfield, KS are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.
WCF is a minimum-security state prison with an approximate capacity of 555 adult male inmates located in Cowley County in south-central Kansas. Capacity at the Wichita Work Release Facility (WWRF) was 250 adult male inmates.
WCF is The facility is located on the north side of the city of Winfield at the site of the former Winfield State Hospital and Training Center and serves a pre-release function designed to provide a smooth transition from an institutional setting to the community for inmates expected to be paroled in the near future.
As with other facilities under the management of the Secretary of Corrections, education, health services and food services are provided through contracts with private vendors.
The work release facility became part of WCF on September 1, 1996. Prior to FY 1997, the work release facility was part of the facilities operations program in the Department of Corrections. The facility provides selected inmates the opportunity for community reintegration prior to their actual release from custody. Inmates housed in the highly structured residential setting become gainfully employed on a full-time basis in the community.
