This facility is for adult inmates.

The Lewis And Clark County Detention Center is a medium-security detention center located at 221 Breckenridge St Helena, MT which is operated locally by the Lewis And Clark County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Lewis And Clark County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, municipalities, the US Marshal's Service and the Helena Police Department who do not have their own long-term lock-up.

The Lewis & Clark County Detention Center is designed to house fifty-eight beds but runs at an average daily population of eighty-two. The detention center is supervised by a Deputy Sheriff Captain and staffed with twenty-five (25) Detention Officers, one (1) part-time Registered Nurse, (1) part-time Physician Assistant and two (2) Transport Officers.

The detention center contracts with PureView Health Center for all inmates' medical care. We also have a full-time therapist on staff from a grant with the Center for Mental Health.

Inmate Mail

Incoming mail must include the sender's full name and address. All personal mail may be opened and scanned for contraband. The only incoming mail accepted will be in letter size and business size envelopes and small, normal sized greeting cards.

• No manila envelopes or packages are accepted.
• No stickers or musical greeting cards will be accepted.
• No letters with perfume, lipstick and/or stains will not be accepted.
• No magazines, books, newspapers or other periodicals will be accepted.

Mail must have the inmate's full name on the envelope.

Medical Services

The Detention Center provides essential medical, dental, and mental health (psychiatric) services by professional staff in a manner consistent with accepted community standards for a correctional environment. The Detention Center uses a licensed and credentialed health care provider in its ambulatory care. For inmates with chronic or acute medical conditions, the Detention Center coordinates with medical referral centers providing advanced care.

Health promotion is emphasized through counseling provided during examinations, education about the effects of medications, infectious disease prevention and education, and chronic care clinics for conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and hypertension. The Detention Center’s food service program provides inmates with meals prepared by a dietitian and receive a more than adequate amount of calories. If there is a medical necessity we provide specialty diets to accommodate a range of medical conditions. The Detention Center promotes environmental health for staff and inmates alike through its emphasis on a clean-air environment and the maintenance of safe conditions in inmate living and work areas.

Lewis & Clark County Detention Center​ – Visitation​

The request form that an inmate is required to turn in MUST include a complete name, address and date of birth for everyone they intend to visit.

Normal visitation is available on Saturday, Sunday and holidays from the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. On those days visitation is stopped for meals between the hours on 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

• Inmates will be allowed only one (1) twenty (20) minute visit per day. Picture identification of the visitor will be required.
• The visitor must be eighteen (18) years old or older.
  • If they are under eighteen (18) years of age and are an immediate family member, they may visit but must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

  Inmates are required to fill out a visitor request form listing those who they wish to have visits with, which is turned into the detention center staff.

Any visitor who is intoxicated, disrespectful or acts unruly will be turned away and may be banned from further visits. Special visits or extended visits will not be allowed unless approval is granted by the Detention Captain or Sergeant.

Visits between inmates and attorneys will be reasonable and will not be limited as to frequency but are requested to be held during the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. The privilege of attorney-client communication shall always be respected by the detention staff.

The only things that may be brought to the detention center are a full book of stamps, medication and cash. Cash brought to the detention center must be deposited on the KIOSK in the public area and will be credited to the inmates' commissary account. Money can also be added to an account using smartdeposit.com (cannot be accessed immediately) or by calling 866-394-0490. A fee applies to any money added. When using any service, you will need the 5-digit permanent ID number of the inmate. The detention center will not accept personal checks or money orders. We will still allow government checks and payroll checks.
