The Shattuck Hospital Correction Unit was established in 1974 as a federally funded pilot program to serve as the Massachusetts Department of Correction acute medical care facility. The unit consisted of a seven-bed ward on 8 South. In 1979 the state assumed funding of Shattuck Hospital Correction Unit due to the success of the Unit. By this time the unit had been moved to 8 North and the Department of Correction had entered into an agreement with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to provide medical services to all Department of Correction inmates.

Due to increased demands for bed space and clinic holding space a dual expansion took place on 8 North and in the Out-Patient Department. 8 North expanded to a fifteen-bed ward in 1977, and construction on the new Out-Patient Department Holding Area was completed in 1982.

In 1987 the last phase of 8 North expansion took place enlarging the Unit capacity to 23 beds. We have the entire 8 North wing of the hospital.

In 1995 the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital began an expansion plan of their own thereby affording the community and the Massachusetts Department of Correction a much wider variety of medical services which now are 33 in number.

The increase in clinics triggered a need for more room in the Out-Patient Department Holding Area. In 1995 a major construction project in the Out-Patient Department Holding Area was completed. The capacity has increased from about 40 to 100 inmates. Between 40 to 80 inmates a day are serviced in the Out-Patient Department Holding area awaiting clinic appointments.
