This facility is for adult inmates.
The Mahaska County Jail is a medium-security detention center located at 214 High Ave E Oskaloosa, IA which is operated locally by the Mahaska County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Mahaska County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, municipalities, the US Marshal's Service and the Oskaloosa Police Department who do not have their own long-term lock-up.
The Mahaska County Jail is operated at the direction of the Sheriff and is supported by the Jail Administration and additional support staff including both men and women Correctional Officers, and Kitchen Staff. All these positions are staffed within the secure perimeter of the Jail Facility.
Jail personnel is responsible for the daily operation of the Jail in keeping the facility a safe and secure environment for both inmates and staff. The jail is direct supervision jail and is operated 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Jail personnel is generally also responsible for maintaining inmate’s court appearances, medical appointments, mental health appointments and transports to and from other correctional facilities and overseeing jail visitation.
How do I send my inmate money for commissary items?
The Mahaska County Jail does accept cash, money orders, and cashiers checks.
How do the phone calls work?
We use Securus Technology for our inmate phone system. The inmates can purchase calling cards off of commissary. You can also set-up an account directly with Securus by calling them at 1-800-844-6591.
Are phone calls and visitation different?
Yes. Visitation requires a trip to the Jail by the person that wants to talk to the inmate. Phone calls can be made by inmates at all times that they are not in lockdown.
Are my phone calls and visitations recorded?
Most visitations and phone calls are recorded.

Rules for Visitors
Any violation of Mahaska County Jail rules during visitation can result in this privilege being suspended or taken away.
No Personal Property is Allowed in the Visitation Room:
- No wallets or purses
- No cell phones or other electronic devices
- No caps or hats
- No cameras or pictures
- No toys, etc …
Note: There are lockers available between the lobby doors. They are 25 cents each; you will receive your quarter back when you return the key to the locker. Please place your personal items in a locker or leave it in your vehicle.
- No Food, Gum, Beverages or Candy:
- Baby bottles needed for feeding may be taken in.
- Coats will be allowed only during inclement/bad weather.
- No animals except for licensed service animals.
- No Tobacco- No cigarettes, No smokeless tobacco/chew
- No person under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs will be allowed to visit.
- No inappropriate behavior-
- Examples: No 'flashing' or the showing of body parts, No see-through clothing.
- Keep children under control.
- Please no shouting or yelling.
- Only two (2) adults per inmate are allowed to visit per scheduled visitation day.
- The parent or legal guardian of any person/child under the age of eighteen (18) must accompany the minor and be on the visitation list, the minor does not have to be on the visitation list.
- Anyone who has been an inmate at the Mahaska County Correctional Facility within the last sixty (60) days is not allowed to visit.
