This facility is for adult inmates.
The Marion County IA Law Enforcement Center is a medium-security detention center located at 211 N Godfrey Ln Knoxville, IA which is operated locally by the Marion County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Marion County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, municipalities, the US Marshal's Service and the Knoxville Police Department who do not have their own long-term lock-up.
Intake Process
Individuals who have been placed under arrest anywhere in Marion County, with the exception of Pella, are first transported to the Marion County Jail in Knoxville. Upon arrival, arrestees must complete the following steps:
- Property Intake
- Medical Screening
- Fingerprinting
- Photographing
- Warrants Check
Appearance in Magistrate Court
Arrestees that are unable to post bail will appear before a Magistrate Judge within 24 hours (including Saturdays and Sundays). The Judge will inform the arrestee of the charge(s) and, if appropriate, will set a bond amount.
Property
Property may NOT be left for an inmate at the Marion County Jail. Items such as hygiene products, underwear, writing materials, phone cards and snacks may be purchased through the commissary by the inmates.
Commissary
A commissary account is established for each inmate upon arrival. All monies applied toward this may be used for candy, paper, stamped envelopes, shampoo, deodorant, socks, underwear, etc. Commissary items not used are taken with the inmate upon their transfer or release. Any commissary balance will be refunded to the inmate upon their transfer or release. Money may be added to an inmate’s account by using the cashier kiosk in the lobby of the Marion County Law Enforcement Center, or by visiting, https://inmatecanteen.com or by calling Inmate Canteen at 1-715-690-2965.
Inmate Mail
- Incoming mail will be delivered to inmates Monday through Friday.
- All incoming mail is opened and searched for contraband.
- Privileged mail sent by legal representatives will only be opened in the presence of the addressed inmate.
- All money received through the mail will be posted to the addressed inmate’s account. Do not send cash or personal checks.
- Unauthorized items mailed to an inmate will be placed in the property room or disposed of as appropriate. Inmates will receive items not disposed of at the time of their release.

Release Process
There are four ways an inmate may be released:
- Bond – as determined by a Magistrate Judge.
- Pre-Trial Release – If unable to post bail, an inmate may apply through the 5th Judicial District Department of Correctional Services for pre-trial release.
- Final Court Appearance and Sentencing – as determined by a District Court Judge.

Visiting hours
Thursday and Sunday evenings, from 5:30 pm until 9:00 pm
Inmates held 7 days or longer are allowed four 20 minute on-site visits per week. Inmates are informed of visiting days and hours and are responsible for relaying the information to those who wish to visit them.
Visitation Rules:
- All visits are done via video/audio connection. Contact visitation will not be allowed.
- All visitors shall first be authorized by the Jail Administrator or his designee before a visit (on-site or off-site) is allowed.
- No one under the age of 14 is allowed to visit inmates on-site. A minor visitor from the age of 14 to 17 must be a son, daughter, stepson, stepdaughter, brother, sister or grandchild and must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Legal proof of the relationship may be required.
- Government-issued photo identifications, such as a driver’s license or state issued ID card, must be presented by each visitor. Visitors who do not have proper identification will not be permitted to visit.
- Anyone held in the Marion County Jail within the previous 6 months will not be permitted to visit.
- All visitors brought into the visitation area shall be subject to search, including but not limited to handbags, sacks, and parcels.
- Visitors must be appropriately dressed. Shoes, shirts and appropriate underclothing must be worn. Visitors wearing suggestive clothing will not be permitted to visit.
- Proper behavior of all visitors is required. Visitation will be denied if the visitor is determined to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- The Jail Administrator, or his designee, may deny any visit or suspend all visits if, in his/her opinion, there is reasonable suspicion that the security of an inmate and/or the security of the facility is in jeopardy.
- Visitors may not give anything or take anything from an inmate.
