The MCFP-Springfield is a federal prison located at 1900 W Sunshine St in Springfield, MO. This federal medium security prison is operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) to hold inmates who have been convicted to and sentenced for a federal crime through the US Department of Justice (DOJ).

The United States Medical Center for Federal Prisoners (MCFP Springfield) is a United States federal prison in Springfield, Missouri which provides medical, mental health, and dental services to male offenders. It is operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, a division of the US Department of Justice.
During the Great Depression, the people of Springfield, Missouri offered 620 acres of land to the federal government to build the prison. Congress authorized the building of the prison in 1930. The prison opened in 1933 as the "United States Hospital for Defective Delinquents". The land surrounding the prison was used by the prisoners for farming until 1966. In 1977, the federal government returned some of the original 620 acres back to the city.
Several political prisoners and spies arrested during World War II were held at MCFP Springfield for medical treatment. Anastasy Vonsyatsky served 3 years of a 5-year sentence there for conspiring to aid Hitler's Germany in violation of the Espionage Act before being released in 1946. Robert Henry Best and Herbert John Burgman, who were sentenced to life in prison for treason in 1948 and 1949 for making propaganda broadcasts for the Nazis, served their sentences at this prison. Best died at MCFP Springfield in 1952, Burgman in 1953.
Several high-profile Mafia Bosses received medical treatment at MCFP Springfield, including Joseph Bonanno of the Bonanno crime family, Vito Genovese and Vincent Gigante of the Genovese crime family and John Gotti of the Gambino crime family. Genovese died at MCFP Springfield in 1969, Gotti in 2002, and Gigante in 2005. Other notable inmates held at MCFP Springfield for treatment include Robert Stroud, known as the "Birdman of Alcatraz", racecar driver Randy Lanier, drug trafficker Michael Riconosciuto, and "The Toxic Pharmacist" Robert Courtney. Terrorists Omar Abdel Rahman and Jose Padilla were also held there for brief periods.
Other notable inmates include Larry Flynt the publisher of the Hustler magazine and the center of several high-profile First Amendment cases; imprisoned for contempt of court for disrespecting a federal judge. Henri Young a bank robber and murderer; attempted to escape from Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary in 1939; Young was the subject of the 1995 film Murder in the First. Garrett Brock Trapnell a serial bank robber; convicted in 1973 of aircraft hijacking and in 1974 of armed robbery and conspiracy to commit kidnapping, died in 1993 serving a life sentence.
Housing: Inmates are housed in one-person and two-person cells to open dormitories.
Health Services: All newly committed general population inmates receive a complete physical examination within 14 days of admission. As part of the admission and annual physical exams for inmates over the age of 50, each inmate is offered a glaucoma test, electrocardiogram, tonometry, and colorectal cancer screening. Periodic health examinations are available based on age-specific guidelines. Sick call, emergency care, immunizations, medications, dental sick call, and prescription eyeglasses are also available to inmates.
Psychology Services: All inmates at MCFP Springfield are screened by Psychology Services staff during the institution’s A&O Program. Screening may include an individual interview. Each unit has a psychologist assigned or available to it to provide counseling and other mental health services to unit inmates. In some cases, the psychologist has an office in the unit where he or she can be easily reached by the inmates, help develop ongoing counseling programs, or for personal crisis intervention. Mental health services are offered for behavioral and emotional problems. There are many alternatives for inmates who have personal problems and a desire to correct them. These options include self-image groups and other voluntary groups. In addition, MCFP Springfield has professional staff who are trained in the various social science fields.
Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP): MCFP Springfield houses a Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP). It also offers a Drug Education Program and a Non-Residential Drug Abuse Program (NR-DAP).
Education Services: MCFP Springfield provides GED and English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) programs. The facility also offers Adult Continuing Education (ACE) classes, a parenting program, and a release preparation program. High school diplomas and post-secondary programs are available through paid correspondence programs.
Advanced Occupational Education: MCFP Springfield offers advanced occupational education in Advanced Small Engine Repair and Landscape Maintenance.
Apprenticeship: Baker, Barber, Biomedical Equipment Technician, Carpenter, Dental Assistant, Electrician, Housekeeping, HVAC, Machinist, Masonry, Meat Cutter, Orthotics Technician, Painter, Plumber, Prosthetic Technician, Sheet Metal, Stationary Engineer, and Steamfitter are all offered as apprenticeship programs at MCFP Springfield.
Library Services: A law library is available with a copy machine and typewriters. A leisure/reading library holds daily newspapers and monthly magazines, as well as fiction and nonfiction books, and a listening library holds video and audio tapes, DVDs, and CDs. Inmates also have access to the TRULINCS Electronic Law Library.
Commissary: Inmates are permitted to shop once a week on a designated day. Food, clothing, drinks, electronics, shoes, over-the-counter medications, and other items can be purchased. A monthly spending limit of $360.00 is imposed.
Recreation Services: The Recreation Center at MCFP Springfield provides fitness equipment, pool tables, games, and a craft workshop (crafts include leather, ceramics, painting, and stick art). The main yard provides a softball field, horseshoes, bocce ball courts, volleyball court, basketball court, pavilion, and tables, walking track, soccer, handball, and flag football. The gymnasium houses a music room, limited fitness equipment, and intramural activities.

The Commissary provides a bank type account for your money & for the procurement of articles not issued regularly as part of the institution administration. Funds deposited by your family, friends, or other sources are stored in your commissary account that we maintain.
